The Department of Computer Science in the College of Science and Mathematics at California State University, Fresno seeks applicants for a tenure-track, academic-year position at the rank of Assistant Professor starting in August 2021, with preference given to candidates specializing in Cybersecurity. The search committee will also consider other fields, including but not limited to Computer Science Education and Theoretical Computer Science. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate students, be active in scholarly and applied research involving students, and engage in service activities.

Candidates shall have the ability to teach a broad range of undergraduate computer science courses to students with diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, preparation, and career goals. An ongoing commitment to improving teaching effectiveness and student engagement is required. The instructional workload is 12 Weighted Teaching Units (WTUs) per semester. However, as part of a start-up package in the first two academic years, the Department and College provide substantial release from teaching responsibilities to allow new faculty time for developing their research agenda and integration of their research and teaching. Long term, the average teaching load can be reduced through assigned time funded by the college or through external grants.

Salary placement depends upon academic preparation and professional experience, and each faculty member will gain a clear path to tenure through the University's Probationary Plan Process.

Our Department: The Department of Computer Science is a rich mix of domestic and international students, staff, and faculty. Our interests span both research and practice, including artificial intelligence, big data, bioinformatics and computational biology, data mining, human-computer interaction and experience, machine learning, meta-heuristics, networking and mobile computing, parallel and high-performance computing, software engineering, types and programming languages, and web technologies. The department currently has eight full-time faculty, several part-time faculty, and a total of approximately 500 students in the B.S. and M.S. programs.

Qualifications:

Required Education (from an accredited institution or foreign equivalent.):
  • An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in Computer Science or closely related discipline from an accredited institution (or equivalent) is required.
  • Candidates nearing completion of their doctorate (ABD) may be considered. However, for an appointment, the doctorate must be completed by August 1, 2021.

Required Experience:
  • Successful teaching experience (including teaching assistantship) at the undergraduate level
  • Demonstrated success with research and scholarly activities, including recent peer-reviewed publications in high-quality journals and/or conference proceedings
  • Commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds

Preferred Experience:
  • Successful teaching experience at the graduate level
  • Familiarity with Computing Education research and assessment
  • Experience with writing grant proposals
  • Demonstrated commitment to encouraging and engaging underrepresented groups in computing (women, racial and ethnic minorities, first-generation and low-income students, LGBTQ, etc.)
