The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (Illinois) and Carle Health System (Carle) have embarked on an exciting endeavor by creating the nation's first engineering-based college of medicine. In partnership, Carle and Illinois are seeking an exceptional leader to serve as the Associate Dean for Student Affairs. A member of the Dean's executive leadership team, the Associate Dean for Student Affairs will provide overall administrative leadership for student affairs within an innovative, engineering-based medical education curriculum.

Responsibilities of the position include student recruitment, admissions, financial aid, registration, orientation, records, advising, scheduling, and student welfare in compliance with Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) standards and aligned with the objectives of the college. The Associate Dean will report directly to the Dean of the Carle Illinois College of Medicine.

This is a rare opportunity to join an enthusiastically engaged, multi-disciplinary group of academic scholars, health care professionals, and specialists in medical education at the intersection of engineering, biological, and clinical sciences. This is a full-time, 12-month, non-tenured, administrative position. Consideration will be given for a zero-percent time, non-tenured faculty appointment in the college, based on the individual's qualifications and interests; opportunities may also exist for concurrent appointment in another University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign college. Future possibilities exist for a partial time faculty appointment and/or partial clinical release time up to 20%. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications; the start date will be as soon as possible after the close of the search.

Responsibilities and Duties:

Strategic Leadership

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership, vision, and oversight to the core functions of Student Affairs, including student recruitment, admissions, financial aid, registration and student records, career advising, quality of student life, and student services, including strategic, financial and personnel planning.

  • Collaborate with members of the college's senior leadership team to recommend, establish, implement and maintain policies, procedures, initiatives, and programs to support an innovatively designed and highly competitive engineering-based college of medicine. Ensure policies and procedures support the mission and objectives of the program and are in alignment with Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accreditation standards.

  • Serve as a contact, mentor, and advocate for students in the college. Foster a safe, healthy, and supportive learning environment for students, including participation in the planning and monitoring of student health services, student counseling and mental health services, and training.

  • Serve as a primary information source and advisor for students and student representatives to provide a forum for students to voice issues and provide ongoing feedback and engagement (such as routine discussions with student representatives and general townhalls with students).

  • Collaborate with the college's standing committees, Diversity Committee, members of the college senior leadership team, the Dean, Executive Associate Dean, and the Chief of Staff on issues related to strategic planning and goals.

  • Provide leadership and oversight of Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) letters, rubrics and instruct students on the process.

  • Provide oversight of a careers in medicine program to guide students' clerkship, away rotations, and electives planning for residency placement.

  • Participate in and help coordinate the planning and execution of recurring academic events including: student orientation, white coat ceremony, commencement, residency fair, student-centered community service projects, and other social events.

  • Serve as or direct the administrative contact for student groups and organizations.

  • Maintain the professional technical standards required as part of the admissions and student progression policies and procedures.

  • Oversee compliance initiatives within the student affairs unit and across the college as appropriate, including Title IX, FERPA, and ADA.

  • Oversee student reporting mechanisms and procedures including mistreatment, professionalism, informal and formal reporting of concerns; facilitate remediation.

  • Provide leadership in the LCME self-study development and the coordination of student-related information to be shared with college stakeholders related to continued accreditation of the Carle Illinois College of Medicine.


Administrative Leadership for the Office of Student Affairs

  • Oversee development of goals, assignment of specific responsibilities and projects, and evaluation of personnel in the Student Affairs unit to ensure duties are performed consistent with LCME and college standards.

  • Develop and implement regular evaluation processes to assess effectiveness of student and department operations and communications.

  • Collaborate with the Associate Dean for Finance and Administration and other members of the college senior leadership team on issues related to budget review and planning pertaining to student needs and programs, space allocation and management.


Executive Leadership and Collaboration with College/Campus Units

  • In collaboration with the Office of Academic Affairs, monitor the academic progress of students and provide academic and personal counseling with referral to student counseling services as necessary.

  • Oversee support to faculty in effectively teaching students with an acknowledged disability, in collaboration with campus Disability Resources and Educational Services.

  • In collaboration with partnering college offices and staff, design, develop, implement and support a service-learning program for students. Collaborate with the implementation of other co-curricular activities for medical students.


Additional Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as a member of the college's Executive Leadership Team, the Senior Leadership Team, and other teams and task forces as designated by the Dean. As needed, attend other meetings of the college as well as joint and/or external committees and groups.

  • As a member of the college's leadership, help foster a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion within the Carle Illinois College of Medicine. Support diversity in all aspects of the educational experience and foster positive collegial relationships among students, staff, and faculty.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships; work cooperatively and collegially with others in a manner consistent with a workplace of dignity and respect; support and engage in equal employment opportunity principles, rules, and regulations.

  • Champion positive inter-professional relationships bridging the college's private/public organization and missions.

  • Cultivate positive relationships with community health partners and support unique college partnerships with industry or other business partners and foundations.

  • Perform other related duties or projects as assigned to further the mission of the Carle Illinois College of Medicine.


Requirements and Qualifications:

Education Required:

  • Master's degree in a field relevant to the position.


Education Preferred:

  • M.D., D.O., Ph.D., Ed.D, or other relevant terminal degree strongly preferred.


Required Experience, Skills, Abilities:

  • The well-credentialed candidate will have a minimum of 5 years of senior-level administrative experience in higher education or health care, preferable in a leadership role within a medical college.

  • Experience with student affairs, admissions, financial aid, or some combination thereof.

  • Experience supervising staff in a university or health care environment.

  • Record of experiences demonstrating skills and abilities to communicate successfully with stakeholders including students, faculty, administrators, staff, alumni, benefactors, members of the professional community, and business partners.

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with faculty and administrators.

  • Record of highly ethical conduct, a sense of respect for confidentiality, a high level of professionalism, collegiality and a strong record of attention to detail.

  • Experiences demonstrating leadership, strategic planning and operational effectiveness resulting in exceptional outcomes.


Preferred Experience, Skills, Abilities:

  • Clinical experience as a practitioner and as a clinical mentor to medical students and residents is strongly preferred.

  • Strong familiarity with the policies and procedures associated with the area of student affairs in an academic institution, preferably in a medical school setting.

  • Evidence of a successful track record as a leader who inspires and encourages students, and is responsive to students' needs and concerns.

  • Evidence of a commitment to diversity.

  • Record that includes experience developing innovative programs for students in areas such as academic and/or personal wellness, career pathway counseling, and the match process.

  • Record of excellent performance as a skilled manager with the ability to meet budgets, develop people, and work collaboratively.

  • Evidence of openness to innovative approaches to achieve goals.


Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 12/5/2022. Salary is commensurate with experience.
