The Alumni Medical Library at Boston University seeks an enthusiastic and collaborative early-career librarian to join our team in a newly created position, Access and Education Librarian. The Access and Education Librarian supports the research, learning, and information needs of students, faculty, and staff on Boston University's medical campus. Reporting to the Head of Education and Information Services, this position is a member of the Education Team and contributes to the delivery of reference and research services, access services, instructional support, and collaborative initiatives. The Access and Education Librarian brings a strong foundational knowledge of librarianship and applies it to assigned projects and tasks of varying scope and complexity. The librarian makes informed decisions within established guidelines while building experience and confidence in the role. The librarian works closely with colleagues across the library to support user services, develop resources and materials, participate in cross-departmental projects, and contribute to ongoing service improvement and special initiatives aligned with the mission of the Alumni Medical Library.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Participate in general research consultations and reference services and support the Education Team in teaching and instruction.
  • Assist users with navigating print and electronic collections, discovery tools, and basic research strategies.
  • Contribute to user-facing guides and instructional materials.
  • Assist users with policies, procedures, and effective use of library spaces and services.
  • Provide frontline access services by staffing service points.
  • Collaborate with fellow team members to develop new services and programs in emerging areas of health sciences education and research.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across library departments and participate in cross-departmental teams, committees, or working groups.
  • Engage in outreach, special projects, and other duties as assigned.
  • Demonstrate commitment to continued professional growth and active participation in professional activities and service by engaging in training and mentoring opportunities to develop core competencies in librarianship.


Required Skills

  • Master's Degree from an ALA-accredited Library and Information Science program or equivalent (recent and upcoming graduates are encouraged to apply)
  • Strong interest in health sciences librarianship
  • Ability to work successfully in a team-oriented environment
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, customer service skills, and written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of information literacy and instruction practices
  • Familiarity with relevant library systems, discovery tools, and electronic resources
  • Willingness to learn and a desire for professional growth
  • Interest in new technologies and innovation in the health sciences


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior experience working in an academic library, health sciences library, special library, or with the health sciences research community.
  • Knowledge of or experience with information resources, tools, and emerging technologies in the health sciences.
  • Knowledge of current trends and practices in scientific scholarly communication.
  • Previous experience in instruction, teaching, and curriculum integration is a plus.
