Boston University School of Law invites applications from candidates for a part-time lecturer position to teach in BU Law's Prison Education Practicum. Teaching the course will begin in Spring 2027. The lecturer will co-teach and supervise law students with another full-time experiential faculty member. The lecturer will have freedom to help further develop the existing one semester, 2-credit curriculum. Working closely with other full-time experiential faculty, the lecturer will teach and supervise law students in the 2-credit practicum. The lecturer will have freedom to help further develop the existing one semester curriculum.
The goal of the course is for law students to teach and learn from incarcerated individuals at Nashua Street Jail (NSJ) and possibly other Boston area jails or prisons. The students will learn skills for legal research and some substantive criminal procedure. They will then learn to present legal topics clearly and design a course themselves for their NSJ students. Finally, practicum students will learn how to navigate the reality of the law's implementation as experienced by their NSJ students and how to apply theoretical principles of legal empowerment.
Students participate in a weekly two-hour seminar that complements their fieldwork. Students teach the class at NSJ themselves, but lecturers provide guidance at the seminars, meet out of class with students between their NSJ visits, and spend class time mooting future classes, debriefing with students, and allowing space for reflection on the students' teaching experience.
The School of Law believes that the cultural and social diversity of our faculty, staff, and students is vitally important to the distinction and excellence of our academic programs. To that end, we are especially eager to hear from applicants who support our institutional commitment to BU as an inclusive, equitable, and diverse community.
Required Skills
The ideal candidate for this position will have experience teaching in a correctional setting, some familiarity with Massachusetts criminal law and a commitment to collaborative education. Experience with clinical pedagogy is also preferred. Teaching and supervision experience are not required, though they may be given great value in the process.
