Job Summary

CU Boulder encourages applications for a Medical Coding and Insurance Coordinator! This temporary role is the diagnostic and procedural billing and coding coordinator for medical services provided by Wardenburg Health Services, as entered in the Electronic Health Record and Practice Management Systems. This position facilitates improvement in the quality, completeness, and accuracy of medical coding for purposes of patient billing. This position is responsible for maintaining documentation of coding and billing audits, and working with Clinical Informatics, Student Insurance, and clinical departments to evaluate current processes, establish process improvements, and implement improvements. This position also provides coding support, staff coverage, and customer service support for the Insurance and Billing Services department.
The role provides excellent customer service for patients by answering questions about insurance processing or status of a claim. This includes assisting students with questions and claims issues and reviewing, evaluating and updating claim payments reflected by the student insurance plan. The role reviews medical records and charges and determines if it is necessary to contact insurance companies to discuss the type of plan the student has. The position will understand insurance terms and how to interpret an explanation of benefits.
This role will provide clear expectations of policy details to students, faculty, and staff, helping them understand coverage limitations, eligibility criteria, and benefits of our campus student health insurance plans. The position interprets and applies health insurance policies to ensure students and our institution align with relevant laws and legislation. The position assists students with understanding their health insurance options, including coverage details, benefits, and out of pocket costs, and actively promotes and sells the campus student health insurance plans to students and their families. The incumbent will engage with students during campus events, orientations, and through direct communication to encourage enrollment in campus student health insurance plans.

The Wardenburg Medical Clinic provides a wide range of health care services for students including: primary care for illnesses and injuries, as well as chronic conditions, physicals, sexually transmitted infection testing and treatment, allergy shots, vaccinations, travel health care, and concussion care.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Coding Reviews:
Conduct focused reviews of billing and patient records to identify areas prone to coding errors, identify nature of the errors, and in conjunction with Clinical Documentation Specialist determine appropriate training opportunities to facilitate improvement in coding accuracy. Conduct 100% audit of charges entered by new providers, providers that are prone to errors and 100% audit of billings mailed to patients. Conduct target audits as necessary or appropriate by clinical managers, administration, and seasonal requirements. Document findings and prepare reports for use by Clinical Informatics training and clinical staff to evaluate root causes of systemic issues identified or training opportunities for individual providers.
Billing Reviews:
Ensure correct diagnostic and procedural coding compliance for the Medical Services and Counseling & Psychiatry departments. Review medical records to ensure the coding for billing is accurate based on generally accepted coding standards and clinical documentation.
Coding Research:
Research and identify resolution for insurance company and patient inquiries or disputes related to medical coding and billing. Work with the Clinical Documentation Specific list and clinical departments to provide coding education for providers and nursing staff.
Process Improvement:
Develop quality assessment tools to ensure accurate coding and provide constructive feedback to providers to assist in this process. Identify problems and inconsistencies, and make recommendations to management and relevant personnel regarding improvements. Work collaboratively with Clinical Informatics, Patient Services and clinical departments to develop processes to improve accuracy in coding and charging for services rendered.
Customer Service/Other Duties:
Work with students to help them understand status of claims and what is needed for processing claims and reimbursement. Actively promote and sell campus insurances by engaging in orientations, campus events, and through direct communication. Assist patients and staff by educating them on insurance processes, requirements, and the insurance timelines for each semester. Be a resource for clinical staff requests regarding procedural and diagnostic coding. Update clinical encounter forms with current procedural codes and prices, and update the Practice Management billing and charge codes to include current CPT codes, HCPC codes, and pricing. Serve on internal task forces charged with reviewing coding practices and implementation of coding standards.

What You Should Know

This is a part-time, temporary position that is expected to last approximately 6 months. The role will work in a hybrid work modality for 20 hours per week, during regular business hours.

What We Can Offer

The pay rate for this role is $22.00 - $26.00 per hour.

What We Require

2 years of relevant experience. Relevant education or certification will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

What You Will Need

  • Basic functional computer skills (experience of Windows based systems).
  • Proficient with Word, Excel and medical billing software.
