Job Summary
The Resident Director (RD) position is a full-time, live-in, professional staff position of Housing & Residential Education and the Student Affairs Division at the University of Utah. The RD is charged with being a programmatic liaison for one of four functional areas: Apartments, Living Learning & Leadership, Social Justice, and First Year Experience. The RD provides coordination of a comprehensive student-focused program for a residential community of 5 to 9 buildings housing 300 to 800 students. The RD has immediate supervision of a staff consisting of 2 to 4 Assistant Residential Education Coordinators, and indirect supervision of 8-18 Resident Advisors, Social Justice Advocates, First Year Mentors, Desk Assistants, or Leadership
Liaisons.
The RD is also responsible for chairing a departmental committee and providing assistance with system-wide collateral processes, to include Student Leader selection, training, assessment, in-services, advising student groups (RHA & NRHH), diversity initiatives, liaison with other Student Affairs offices, etc. Successful RD's are those who can challenge, support, and guide both student and staff. RD's have strong supervisory, communication, administrative and crisis management skills. Vision, enthusiasm, flexibility, and commitment are also highly desired. Successful RD's will have excellent management, and proven problem solving skills.
The RD reports directly to an Assistant Director for Residential Education. Housing & Residential Education and the University of Utah value interactions among individuals with varying traditions, cultures, orientation, religious beliefs, economic backgrounds, and racial/ethnic origins. Responsibilities
Provides direct supervision to Assistant Residential Education Coordinators (graduate students) and indirect supervision to Resident Advisor staff. Manages administrative functions for the area including occupancy, facility issues/concerns, capital improvement projects, renewal and replacement suggestions and appropriate billing for building damages. Oversees the overall programming efforts for the living area that foster growth opportunities and positive relationships among residents. Serves as a liaison to campus partners associated with living/learning programs. Collaborates with University departments to evaluate and revise these programs.
Acts as the student conduct hearing officer to address student conduct policy violations and takes action as appropriate. Maintains accurate records in an online student conduct system. Serves as a referral agent for students with academic, career or personal concerns. Supports the development of student leadership and student government activities. Provides leadership to collateral projects which include student leader selection, training, department programming, diversity initiatives, professional development activities, staff recognition and representing the department on various committees within Student Affairs. Recommends, interprets and implements housing and University policies. Works with maintenance and custodial staff to ensure a clean and safe living environment. Participates in the rotating on-call coverage with other Residential Education staff members. Responds to building emergencies and student crisis situations, including on-site management and upward communication protocols. Builds effective partnerships with staff, students and University departments.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a related area plus two years experience in residence life management, programming, student activities or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required. Demonstrated supervision, organization, planning, group dynamics, human relations and effective communication skills also required. Master's degree in College Student Personnel or related area and one year post-master's related experience preferred.
