Department Information
Within this setting, the Department of Civil Engineering and Construction is committed to preparing students for leadership roles in the planning, design, and management of integrated infrastructure systems that are critical to society. Our mission emphasizes experiential learning, research, and community engagement that address regional and global challenges in construction, civil infrastructure, and the built environment. Looking ahead, the Department is committed to expanding its research capacity in resilient and sustainable infrastructure and advancing the integration of digital technologies in design and construction, while preparing the next generation of experts to meet the nation's growing infrastructure and its renewal needs.
The four (4) faculty hired through this cluster will play a pivotal role in shaping the future. This initiative aims to bring together expertise in the following areas: (1) digital transformation, (2) advanced structural methods, (3) process & infrastructure systems, and (4) infrastructure resilience and water. The new faculty will strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration, expand graduate education (including PhD-level research), and position Georgia Southern University as a leader in solutions for America's new and aging infrastructure.
Job Summary
Reporting to the Department Chair, the position requires teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, developing and sustaining an externally funded research program, and providing service to the department, college, university, and profession. The successful candidates will teach courses in assigned areas, like Construction Finance, Quantity Estimating, Cost Estimating; Building Information Modeling, Construction Graphics, Project Planning and Scheduling; Introduction to Construction Management, Construction Administration; Building Materials & Systems, Construction Surveying, and/or Building Codes, and may develop new courses aligned with their expertise, mentor undergraduate and graduate students, support accreditation and assessment efforts, and actively engage in professional societies. The position is a tenure-track, 10-month academic year appointment.
Required Qualifications
- Earned doctorate in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Construction Management, or a closely related field* with at least 18 graduate semester hours in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, or Construction Management, by August 1, 2026.
- Evidence of research productivity in one or more of the following four relevant areas:
- Digital Transformation: digital twin technologies, AI applications in construction, and smart cities
- Advanced Structural Methods: prefabrication (modular construction) and computational structural engineering.
- Process & Infrastructure Systems: lean construction practices, remote sensing, GIS, geospatial analytics, and sustainable transportation.
- Infrastructure Resilience: innovative materials, robust infrastructure, and water resource management
*Note that applicants from other related fields will also be considered
- Demonstrated ability or potential to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in construction management and civil engineering.
- Demonstrated ability or potential to secure external research funding.
- Commitment to engaging with best practice initiatives in instruction and pedagogy, mentoring, and curriculum design and development
- Demonstrated strong and sustained commitment to advancing a robust research and scholarship agenda, including the production of peer-reviewed research and creative works appropriate to the discipline.
- Willingness to engage with institutional student success initiatives.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience preparing or contributing to research proposals for external funding (federal, state, or industry).
- Evidence of collaborative research activity, particularly with faculty or interdisciplinary teams.
- Exposure to or involvement with undergraduate and graduate student mentoring or supervision (e.g., assisting with MS/PhD student projects, co-authoring papers).
Proposed Salary
Commensurate with experience.
This is an exempt position paid on a monthly basis.
