Officers provide protection for students, employees, visitors, and property, and take a proactive approach to crime prevention, education, and community engagement.

Officers conduct investigations, preserve evidence, provide legal testimony, and may serve in specialized assignments such as patrol, substation operations, victim and witness assistance, or crime prevention. UVU Police Officers are trusted partners in fostering a campus atmosphere where learning, growth, and safety thrive together.

Summary of Responsibilities


  • Patrols university property, either in a vehicle or on foot, to provide security and enforce traffic laws. Handles public assistance calls, including assisting motorists, investigating traffic collisions, directing traffic, resolving personal disputes, maintaining public order, and addressing other public requests.
  • Arrest violators of the law and issue citations. Records activity by way of first and supplementary reports, and other required forms.
  • Conducts formal investigations of criminal activity.
  • Performs public relations activities as required to satisfy public inquiry.
  • Testifies in court of law and at other formal hearings, as well as attends a minimum of forty hours of sanctioned training each year to maintain Utah Peace Officer Certification.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.


Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications


  • Graduation from a standard senior high school or the equivalent AND P.O.S.T. graduate.
  • Applicants with a contingent offer will be subjected to a psychological test and a thorough background check.
Licenses or Certifications:
  • Applicant must be currently a Certified Law Enforcement Officer or certifiable as a State of Utah Law Enforcement Officer.

  • Knowledge of Utah Code, local laws, and ordinances.
  • Knowledge of investigative tactics, information sources, and productive lines of inquiry.

  • Skills in the use of firearms, the operation of police vehicles, and equipment.

Abilities
  • Ability to run and walk around campus to protect all personnel and property.
  • Ability to perform physical exertion duties of a hazardous nature.
  • Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle at high speed, in pursuit situations, and in adverse conditions while maintaining safe operation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse group or individuals.
  • Ability to effectively work in highly stressful situations.
  • Ability to maintain control in high-stress situations.
  • Ability to read and comprehend legal and non-legal documents.
  • Ability to direct traffic, administer emergency medical aid, and lift, drag, and carry people away from dangerous situations.
