Job Summary:



The Department of Pediatrics, Section of Gastroenterology, has an opening for a full-time Entry Laboratory Science Professional to work at the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora. This position will assist with investigator-initiated projects studying the immunobiology of eosinophils within the context of allergic inflammatory diseases at mucosal surfaces (i.e., lung and gastrointestinal tract). The successful candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary team of researchers working in the lab of Dr. Lisa Spencer.



Studies in the Spencer laboratory involve parallel and integrative work with primary human cells, patient biospecimens, and mouse models of disease. The major function of the Entry Laboratory Science Professional will be the execution of bench research projects using in vitro, in vivo, and ex vivo models. The Entry Laboratory Science Professional will be expected to maintain a detailed laboratory notebook and actively participate in lab meetings, journal clubs, research-in-progress talks, and other meetings with Dr. Spencer's research team and associated groups (e.g., within the Mucosal Inflammation Program, Gastrointestinal Eosinophilic Diseases Program, etc.). Work will also include administrative duties, for example, purchasing and maintaining lab supplies, maintaining sample and reagent databases, and keeping IACUC and IRB protocols up to date.



Entry Laboratory Science Professionals perform duties in an experimental lab, or wet lab, and handle a variety of chemicals and/or potential "wet" hazards. Entry Laboratory Science Professionals perform duties in laboratories where chemicals, drugs, or other materials or biological matters are tested and analyzed.



Key Responsibilities:
  • Conducting projects under the supervision of Dr. Spencer.
  • With training, the Entry Laboratory Science Professional will plan and perform murine studies involving mouse models of gastrointestinal, skin, and/or lung inflammation, followed by tissue isolation, processing, and analysis, and analyze experiments. Studies may range from acute time-points of days to chronic time-points of weeks.
  • Molecular and cellular biology experimental approaches in the Spencer lab are broad and often vary with the biological questions addressed. Some examples include RT-PCR, cell culture, ELISAs, and light and fluorescence microscopy.
  • Preparing data and long-term schedules for presentations.
  • Contributing to the preparation and review of research manuscripts.
  • Developing research protocols. Ensure that protocols are up to date with COMIRB and IACUC.
  • Managing daily activities in the laboratory, including supply ordering, acting as a contact point for purchases, equipment, and lab maintenance, developing and maintaining research databases, and other administrative and regulatory business as required.
  • Coordinating multiple research projects and collaborative studies.
  • Training students and entry-level technicians on lab techniques.
  • Contact person for clinical collaborators and other on-campus labs, particularly with regard to coordinating and obtaining patient biospecimens.
  • Planning and coordinating lab meetings and events as necessary.
  • Conducting literature searches.
  • Providing input to long-term plans and strategies for the function of the lab.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, or a related field.



Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis.



Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.



Condition(s) of Employment:
  • Willing to work occasional weekend hours if needed.



Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior experience or background within an experimental or wet lab.
  • Experience with RNA isolation and qPCR.
  • Experience with protein isolation and western blots.
  • Experience with enzyme activity assays.
  • Experience with ELISA.
  • Experience with laboratory animal handling.
  • Experience with R software.
  • Experience with Primary Cell Culture.
  • An understanding of molecular biology.
