Job Summary:

The Department of Ophthalmology seeks a half-time (0.5 FTE) Scientist for a one-year appointment. The person will perform cell culture and animal research. They will conduct rodent and pig eye experiments related to diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma. The job requires hands-on experiments with live animals. They will be responsible for preparing media and reagents, as well as other duties within the cell culture facility. Additionally, the person hired for this position will provide support to other laboratory research activities, including genotyping animals, maintenance of animal colonies, IACUC protocol maintenance and updates, maintenance and updates of laboratory chemical reagent inventories, and coordination with the PI on compliance matters. The successful candidate will join Dr. Ram Nagaraj's laboratory.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with and support the PI and other stakeholders with laboratory and research functions
  • Conduct live animal experiments
  • Utilize a variety of laboratory techniques required for research projects
  • Perform experiments and tabulate and analyze research
  • Support analytical testing process using standard lab support knowledge in the collection and review of conditions, including preserving samples, completing sample preparation, documenting and communicating results
  • Culture, maintenance and expansion of human retinal cells.
  • Preparation of media and reagents for cell culture.
  • Maintaining an organized and up-to-date laboratory notebook.
  • Aiding the Lab manager with lab organization, maintaining inventory and ensuring regulatory compliance and lab safety

Work Location:

Onsite - this role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, CO.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
  • Ph.D. in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics or a related field
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience with cell culture and animal models of eye diseases

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior experience or background within an experimental or wet lab
  • Experience in cell culture and animal experiments is desired

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of advanced laboratory techniques in molecular biology, gene editing and protein biochemistry
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution
  • Ability to interpret and master complex research protocol information
  • Ability to communicate effectively and maintain good working relationships with diverse employees at all levels throughout the institution
  • Responsibility and reliability are critical for this position
  • Ability to interpret complex rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Ability to listen and follow precise protocols and written instructions.
  • The successful candidate will be detail-oriented, self-motivated, a fast learner and possess excellent time management and organizational skills.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

$40,000-45,000

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
