Salary/Pay Range: $20,250 for 6 months of work. Compensation will be commensurate upon experience and qualifications. This position is Non-exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) overtime provisions.

Work Location: In the field, with the potential for remote work.

Benefits at a Glance

Because this appointment is temporary, you will not be eligible to receive all of the benefits normally provided to members of the university staff under the standard University of Colorado benefits programs. You are not eligible to receive paid vacation leave, medical, or retirement benefits. However, you are eligible to accrue sick leave and you will accrue 0.034 hours of sick leave per hour worked.

Summary

The person hired for this position will help with field research and data analysis for a Department of Energy funded project investigating potential visual cues that attract bats to wind turbines.

Field research for this position will start in mid-September and last approximately one month. During this time the researcher will be camping in Humboldt Redwoods State Park in Northern California.

The cost of travel to the field site and camping fees will be covered by the grant.

The remaining work will be conducted in the Sensory and Movement Ecology Lab, run by Dr. Aaron Corcoran from October 2025 through February 2026. There is the possibility for this portion of the work to be conducted remotely.

Essential Functions

The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
  • Setting up and monitoring audio and video equipment that are part of multiple ongoing experiments.
  • Working at night, as late as until 2-4am, depending on the night and conditions.
  • Working in challenging conditions.
  • Walking/hiking back and forth between site locations up to ½ mile at a time.
  • Conducting data analysis in the Sensory and Movement Ecology lab at UCCS, headed by Dr. Aaron Corcoran. This includes manual and semi-automated review of video data, development of machine learning image analysis techniques and quantitative analysis of results.
  • Working with undergraduate students in the lab, who will be assisting with the project.
  • Other duties as assigned


Qualifications
Qualifications
  • An undergraduate degree in Biology or closely related field is required.
  • A master's degree in biology or related field is preferred.
  • Field biology experience working in challenging conditions is preferred.
  • Experience with camera equipment and/or video analysis is preferred.
  • Experience with computer coding and data analysis is preferred.
