Job Summary

The Division of Student Life is encouraging applications for the Director of Student Involvement position! The Director of the Center for Student Involvement (CSI) plays a vital role on the CU Boulder campus, which is committed to providing student involvement and engagement opportunities. Through the promotion of creativity and innovation, this position responds to the needs of the students and community while creating a diverse, inclusive, and welcoming experience for all CU students. This position is responsible for the development of long and short-range departmental, CU Student Government (CUSG), and Student Life divisional goals aimed at supporting and driving a comprehensive student experience. The position reports to an Assistant Vice Chancellor within the Division of Student Life.The Director of CSI serves as the primary leader and manager for all aspects of student involvement and student engagement, including strategic visioning, day-to-day oversight, implementation of initiatives, and formal assessment and evaluation in coordination with the strategic plans and goals of the Division of Student Life and CU Boulder. The Director of CSI provides strategic management, administrative, and supervisory functions within a complex and multifaceted department with various functional areas, including:

The position is tasked with leading the development of a broad campus student engagement strategy, which includes student development, programs and events, late night programming, and student leadership. This position manages the teams that provide oversight and support to the over 500+ Recognized Student Organizations on campus. Supervising a team of sixteen (16) full-time staff members, including one (1) Associate Director, two (2) Assistant Directors, and thirteen (13) other professional staff. This position also advises the CSI Joint Board chair (Student Position). Who We Are

The Center for Student Involvement (CSI) helps students build vibrant, engaging, and safe communities on campus. This student-fee funded unit is a collaborative team providing multifaceted opportunities and resources for students to get involved on campus through programming, student organization support, and student employment. CSI oversees more than 500 recognized student organizations on campus and assists students in creating new organizations that match their interests. Annually, CSI puts on over 200 campus events to help students connect, explore their interests, and have fun. Students can also participate in various programs within CSI to develop leadership skills, gain professional experience, enhance cultural awareness, and more.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Leadership
  • Provides strategic leadership, advocacy, direction, and vision for the 16+ professional staff and approximately 75 student staff in the Center for Student Involvement (CSI).
  • Holds full supervisory responsibility for a team of professional staff members, including training, evaluation, compensation, promotion, and other employment-related decisions.
  • In collaboration with the student chair of the CSI Joint Board, supports member recruitment and development, annual schedule and agenda setting, and ensures access to vital information or staff support to implement Board responsibilities and initiatives.
  • Provides strategic management, administrative and supervisory functions within a sophisticated and dynamic department with various functional areas including: Late Night Programming & Events, Student Engagement, Student Organizations, Student Organization Resource Center Program Council, Dennis Small Cultural Center, Senior Class Council, CU GOLD Student Leadership Program, and the Alienware Buffalo E-Sports and Gaming Lounge.
  • Oversees the process and expectations for over 500 Recognized Student Organizations, including but not limited to fiscal compliance with University expectations, and in partnership with Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution, accountability processes for Student Organizations. This includes interim and permanent disciplinary decisions for Registered Student Organizations per the RSO Agreement, and in alignment with the Student Conduct Process, CU Student Government, and Federal due process law.
  • Oversees the management of the BuffConnect student organization online platform.
  • Is responsible for the vision and direction of the Dennis Small Culture Center
  • Supervises the vision and direction for the CU Gold leadership program
  • Is responsible for the vision and direction for the Alienware Buffalo E-Sports and Gaming Lounge
  • Actively strives to foster and maintain a workplace climate that is supportive of employees and respectful of differences, as well as to create an inclusive environment that cultivates leadership development, intercultural engagement, and a sense of belonging in support of student academic success.
  • Identifies and champions standard methodologies for effective student engagement strategies within the University of Colorado Boulder.
  • Supervises the preparation of departmental publications, statistical and annual reports.
  • Engage in regular meetings with the leadership of the University of Colorado Student Government (CUSG). This includes regular interactions with student leaders and balancing the needs and desires of CUSG, with the Divisional and Campus needs.
Planning and Development
  • Provides leadership to ensure the effective operations of CSI.
  • Oversees the tracking and measuring of trends in student engagement, with the intent of continuing to develop an innovative and attractive student experience.
  • Continually monitors student needs and interests, as well as remains abreast of current models and practices in the field of student engagement, ensuring that staff use relevant data, scholarship, and student development theories/models in the development and execution of the services offered by CSI.
  • Anticipates issues, preparing short- and long-term plans for wide-ranging campus priorities related to student engagement. Sets specific measurable goals and objectives, and supports CSI Staff in the execution and achievement of stated objectives and results.
  • Provides resources and guidance to support process improvements for CSI and ensures that all department programs are aligned to meet current and future campus and community needs.
  • Develops, implements, and analyzes assessment initiatives that foster student success; applies assessment data to enhance the student experience, report student engagement trends, and supports CSI staff in implementing necessary programmatic and policy changes.
Budget and Fiscal Planning
  • Provide fiscal management and development of the $2.1 million departmental budget, funded through the CU Student Government and has fiscal oversight over other cost centers advised by CSI (including Distinguished Speakers Board, Cultural Events Board, Student Organization Allocation Committee, and KVCU Radio) and College and School Student Governments with combined budgets of $1.4 million dollars. Additionally, CSI is responsible for the oversight of all Recognized Student Organizations (RSO) and Recognized Social Greek Organizations (RSGOs) finances, revenue generation, and campus bank accounts.
  • Manages, administers, and advocates for the overall budget for CSI, ensuring adequate planning for and responsible expenditure of fiscal resources in a manner consistent with all University policies and applicable local, state, and federal laws.
  • In conjunction with the Associate Director for Budget & Finance position, develop and present annual and strategic budgets, coordinate reports, proposals, and summaries for reporting to CU Student Government and Student Life.
  • Partner with advancement to support gift fund development, ongoing gift building opportunities, and student scholarships.
Community Outreach and Collaboration
  • Cultivates and influences relationships with campus and non-campus partners (e.g., faculty, students, staff, neighbors, campus and local/city law enforcement authorities, local government officials, alumni, parents, local businesses, etc.) to provide a collaborative, integrated approach to student engagement.
  • Develops and maintains relationships and clear lines of communication with various campus partners, including the Rec Center, Health Promotion, Fraternity and Sorority Life, the UMC, and other departments across campus.
  • Works with various University departments including Finance, Procurement Services, Staff Council, Human Resources, Facilities Management, Risk Management, Strategic Relations, Police Department, Vice Chancellor's and Chancellor's offices, and Student Life departments. Serves as a colleague to other directors in the Division of Student Life. Works with and may chair committees on Division and University initiatives, policies, and student engagement and retention. Supports the Division's and the University's strategic plan and goals.
  • Collaborates with various student-run boards, impacting the success of the CSI. Attends regularly scheduled meetings of the CSI Board, CUSG Finance Board, and CUSG Legislative Council; various student organization functions; and other meetings that pertain to the operation of the CSI and Division of Student Life. Engages in dialogue with students and evaluates decisions through a student development lens. Positively promotes the image of the CSI and the University.
  • Co-leads staff to support free expression for students. Engages in critical incident planning and drills with staff.
Campus Representation and other assigned duties
  • Oversees the advisement of the following CUSG Cost Centers and Coalitions: Program Council, Homecoming Coalition, Cultural Events Board, Student Organization Allocation Committee.
  • Provides expert advice, consultation and influence to faculty administrators, staff administrators, students, and the campus community in the areas including but not limited to: student engagement, student leadership, Program Council (a student council that brings artists to campus and runs productions of concert and video events), student organizations, and student activism on campus.
  • Serves on high-profile leadership committees, on-campus and within the community, promoting policy and programs; and advocates for changes that affect student life and reinforces the development of a well-rounded student experience.
  • Provides leadership in shaping the divisional approach to student programming and the student experience.
  • Serve on a variety of division, campus, and University-wide committees and work groups to ensure a more seamless educational experience for students.
  • Represents CSI at Divisional leadership meetings, retreats, etc.
  • Collaborate with other CU schools, conference affiliates, and colleges and universities in Colorado to calibrate standard methodologies and approaches to student involvement and engagement.
  • Volunteer at division and university functions and events.
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.


What You Should Know

  • This position's work schedule is predominantly held at the CU Boulder campus. Typical working hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm. Some additional nights or weekends may be required due to pre-planned events.


What We Can Offer

  • The salary range for this position is $100,000 - $110,000 per year.

What We Require

  • A Master's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.
  • 5+ years of experience providing administrative and managerial oversight for University programming or student activities operations, including major program event planning and production, budgeting, advising student groups and/or student boards, from a student development theory framework.
  • 3+ years of experience in managing and supervising full-time staff or student staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students, staff, and administrators in a complex system with multiple direct and indirect reporting lines within the framework of university and state policies and procedures.

  • Capacity to simultaneously engage multiple issues of very significant, policy, operational, and legal complexity with a large and diverse number of constituencies.
