Job Summary:
The Division of Student Affairs at Eastern Washington University (EWU) is pleased to announce a newly created leadership role focused on influencing positive student outcomes and increasing student success, persistence and retention through comprehensive first-year initiatives.

The Senior Director position will be pivotal in shaping the strategic direction of Orientation and Family Programs, Welcome Week, the First Year Seminar and other programs. This is an exciting opportunity for an innovative leader passionate about shaping student transition programming and advancing the institutions mission centered on inclusive, equitable and transformative learning experiences, driving the pursuit of knowledge with affordable academic excellence and student success practices.

The Senior Director of Eagles First Year will serve as the liaison between Student Affairs and Academic Affairs in the design and management of the first-year experience at EWU. This vital part of the student experience and onboarding will ensure retention and progression to the second year and beyond. This team member provides dedicated programming, structure, and direction to pivotal stages of student transition.

The Senior Director of Eagles First Year serves as a member of the Student Affairs Thought Leadership Group (TLG) and reports to the Associate Vice President for Campus Life. The Senior Director is responsible for the development, planning and implementation of a high profile, dynamic, comprehensive student-centered first year experience program for new students and their families. The Senior Director designs, implements and coordinates university efforts aimed at strengthening the academic, personal and social success of undergraduate students and their families. This leader will leverage their work, and that of their team, to support and enhance student engagement and facilitate student persistence and success ultimately leading to increased student retention.

The Senior Director collaborates with Student Affairs departments, a broad array of Academic Affairs administrative units including Admissions, Advising, Records and Registration, and academic college leadership to develop programs and services that provide students a seamless transition to the University and promote student engagement, success, and retention. The Senior Director supervises the Director of Orientation and Family Programs.

The Senior Director will be responsible for using their experience, political acumen, and understanding of the organizational processes of the institution in leading the re-envisioning, development, implementation, and operation of a for-credit college success-focused first-year seminar designed to support first-year college students in their transition. The Senior Director will oversee curriculum development, instructor recruitment and training, and course delivery of the first-year seminar.

The salary for this position is $80,631(minimum) up to $90,000. Where the hired candidate will begin within this range is dependent on education, experience, and skills. Required Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree in education, social work, or related field.
  • At least four (4) years of progressive experience in higher education or related professional experience, with prior direct work experience in Orientation/First-Year Experience programs.
  • Experience in teaching at the college level, preferably with first-year students.
  • Strong understanding of student development theories and practices.
  • Three (3) years demonstrated, professional work experience with budgets.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively develop and execute communications to a broad and diverse audience.
  • Proficiency in professional written and verbal communication.
  • Solid computer skills, including experience with web content organization, data analysis, and mastery of MS Office Suite.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering an inclusive environment built upon cultural humility, respect for diversity and social justice.
  • Demonstrated organizational and analytical skills.
  • Experience supervising professional staff

  • Masters Degree in Higher Education Administration, Counseling, College Student Personnel, or related field.
  • Seven (7) or more years of higher education experience, with significant experience in orientation, first-year programs, and first-year academic seminars.
  • Working familiarity with programs and services for family members, first-generation students, and transfer students
  • Experience with traditionally underserved student populations
  • Bi-lingual fluency with Spanish preferred

Job Duties:
Leadership & Supervision
  • Provide leadership and supervision to the first-year experience team, with direct supervision of the Director of Orientation and Family Programs.
  • Recruit, interview, select, and hire staff members.
  • Provide supervision, continual evaluations, discipline/corrective action, and training.
  • Create and ensure opportunities for team professional development through multiple mechanisms.
  • Oversee strategic delivery of first-year event programming (Orientation, Welcome Week, course seminars, etc.), communication, and partnerships.
  • Increase collaboration and communication with parents and families
  • Provide leadership within the Student Affairs Division as well as across the University around facilitating the first-year experience.
  • Serve as a member of Campus Life Leadership Team and Student Affairs Thought Leadership Group.
  • Serve on campus-wide committees.

Program Development and Management
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive strategy for the first-year experience that aligns with EWUs mission, vision, values, and strategic goals.
  • Collaborate with academic and administrative departments to re-imagine, develop, and implement a first-year seminar into curricula and university initiatives.
  • Develop a comprehensive strategic plan for the first-year experience
  • Develop, oversee, and manage the first-year departmental budget. Manage all allocations and expenditures.
  • Ensure compliance and appropriate use of the teams budget management.

Administration & Assessment
  • Remain current on best practices in first-year and transition programs, success, and student retention efforts.
  • Set assessment priorities and develop protocols to manage the collection, assessment, and reporting of data and stories.
  • Analyze participation in first-year activities and develop outreach strategies based on data.
  • Create quarterly and annual reports utilizing qualitative and quantitative data on first-year initiatives.
  • Advise students, departments, faculty & external constituents regarding program participation, guidelines, and policies.
  • Publicize outcomes and student success information to administration, faculty, students, families, alumni, donors, and community partners.
  • Active engagement and participation in regional and national organizations promoting the success and retention of students

Conditions of Employment:
This position, during the course of university employment will be involved in the receipt of, or accountability for, university funds or other items of value, as well as the unsupervised access with the developmentally disabled, vulnerable adults or children under the age of 16.
