Position Summary
The Academic Counselor for Student-Athletes is responsible for providing academic support and guidance for members of the University's men's and women's basketball teams. Both teams compete in the Atlantic 10 Conferences.
Essential Functions
- Tracks academic progress and provides academic support and assistance to members of the men's and women's basketball teams.
- Assesses the needs of student-athletics and, as appropriate, develops, manages, implements, and monitors mentoring and tutoring sessions.
- Promotes strategies for student success and retention through individual and group meetings.
- Creates and implements programs focusing on general academic support strategies such as time management, organizational skills, test-taking, etc., as well as career development and personal growth.
- Refers student-athletes to campus tutoring and academic support resources; tracks participation and provides additional support as needed.
- Collaborates closely with advisors in the Fordham College Advising Center and the Gabelli School of Business to prepare students for registration, develops academic success plans, and reviews graduation requirements.
- Serves as referral to other University services; collaborates with campus partners for programming and event development.
- Works closely with others in the office to ensure that student-athletes are meeting university and NCAA eligibility requirements.
- Collaborates with coaching staff around student well-being.
- Maintains up-to-date understanding of Fordham, NCAA, and Atlantic 10 Conference rules and regulations.
- As needed, conducts supervised study sessions; assists in reviewing and responding to mid-semester academic performance reports; assists in coordination and administration of tutorial support.
- As needed, assists with academic recruiting presentations and visits for prospective student-athletes.
- Some evening and weekend work will be required along with possible travel.

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in psychology, counseling, education, sports management, or related field.
- Previous experience providing tutoring support, study skills assistance, time management strategies, or other learning support instruction to students in a post-secondary context.
- Demonstrated understanding of DEI efforts and programming within the context of collegiate athletics.
- Ability to work constructively and collaboratively in a diverse environment, demonstrating strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build trusting relationships.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to motivate and inspire students.
- Successful candidates should have a knowledge of and commitment to the goals of Jesuit Education.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in counseling, education, sports management, psychology or related field.
- Demonstrated experience in supporting student-athletes in areas such as advising, career/ leadership development, academic support, or personal development.
- Familiarity with the time and scholastic challenges faced by student-athletes seeking excellence in scholarship and sports at another rigorous Division I institution.
- Strong knowledge of college student development theory.
- Knowledge and experience of NCAA rules and the NCAA Applications platform.
- Demonstrated understanding of Fordham University's commitment to Jesuit education.
- Working knowledge of G-Suite, Salesforce, and Banner.
Minimum Starting Salary: $58,500
Maximum Starting Salary: $64,048
Note: Salary is commensurate with qualifications, experience, and skills.
