Job Summary
To perform activities relating to or supporting the preparation, compounding, packaging, storing, recording, processing, dispensing, labeling and delivery of medications and pharmaceutical supplies under the supervision of a pharmacist, supervisor or resident.

Responsibilities*

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


The Kellogg Eye Center (KEC) Pharmacy encompasses both a retail pharmacy and an operating room pharmacy. Pharmacy technician duties in the KEC Pharmacy may include:
  • Interact with internal and external customers demonstrating customer service excellence
  • Prepare sterile products, including ophthalmic preparations and hazardous substances
  • Perform basic metric conversions and calculations
  • Deliver medications to the operating room, PACU and clinic areas
  • Correctly distribute controlled substances
  • Assist in the retrieving/filling medication orders from electronic systems
  • Maintain automated dispensing machines on unit (stock, restock, pull expired meds)
  • Assist in general pharmacy cleaning/maintenance/stocking
  • Prepare investigational drugs per research protocols
  • Perform assigned nursing unit inspections for compliance with medication standards
  • Respond to telephone inquiries
  • Greet patients at the outpatient pharmacy
  • Intake prescription and insurance information
  • Enter prescriptions onto computer
  • Secure prior authorizations and resolve insurance problems, as needed
  • Prepare prescription orders
  • Use Point-Of Sale system to process retail sales
  • Handle cash according to University and department policies
  • Other duties/projects as assigned by supervisor to assist with preparation and delivery of patient medications
  • Assist with training of staff
  • Rotating weekend shifts

Required Qualifications*

  • Pharmacy Technician Associate:
    • High School Diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience
    • Valid Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before hire date, verifiable through the State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs
    • Proficient communication, computer and basic mathematic skills are necessary.
    • Must be able to prioritize with accuracy and dependability.
  • Pharmacy Technician Intermediate:
    • High School Diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Valid Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before hire date, verifiable through the State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.
    • One or more years of relevant pharmacy practice or equivalent experience is necessary.
    • Proficient communication, computer and basic mathematic skills are necessary.
    • Must be able to prioritize with accuracy and dependability
  • Pharmacy Technician Senior
    • High School Diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience
    • Valid Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before hire date, verifiable through the State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs
    • Two or more years of relevant pharmacy practice or equivalent experience is necessary.
    • Proficient communication, computer and basic mathematic skills are necessary.
    • Must be able to prioritize with accuracy and dependability

Desired Qualifications*
At least one year technician experience is highly desirable. Basic algebra also highly desired.

Licensure & Certification
The State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) requires all Pharmacy Technicians to be licensed. The new regulations allow for a one-time temporary license for up to 1 year, during which time a Technician must successfully complete requirements to become certified and meet all other State of Michigan requirements for a Full Pharmacy Technician License. UMHS Pharmacy Department provides coaching and additional information to support Technicians to become certified and licensed.

Newly hired pharmacy technicians must obtain a valid Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before their hire date. This can include a Full Michigan Pharmacy Technician License or a Temporary Michigan Pharmacy Technician License. If a technician obtains a Temporary Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before their date of hire, they must obtain a Full Michigan Pharmacy Technician License within 1 year of hire date or before the Temporary Michigan Pharmacy Technician License expires, whichever is sooner, in order to maintain employment. In addition, All pharmacy technicians must obtain PTCB certification within 6 months of hire date or in time to obtain a Full Michigan Pharmacy Technician License, whichever is sooner, and they must maintain their PTCB certification throughout the duration of employment at UMHS as a Pharmacy Technician.
