General Purpose
Undergeneral supervision,leads, oversees and performs a variety of difficult, skilled work in the maintenance of grounds, fields, trees,landscaped and hardscaped areas;operates grounds maintenance equipment;and performsrelated duties as assigned.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provides input in selecting, training and providing day-to-day lead work guidance and direction to other staff;assigns, schedules and monitors work for completeness, accuracy and conformance with District, department and legal/regulatory requirements and standards; monitors workflow to ensure that mandated deadlines are being met in an optimal manner; provides information, instruction and training on work procedures and technical, legal andregulatory requirements.
  • Provides input to supervisor on employee work performance and behaviors; assists in ensuring a fair, open and inclusive work environment in accordance with the District's mission, goals and values.
  • Assigns daily duties to staff, coordinates special requests from other departments and adjusts employee schedules as required.
  • When assigned, prepares and monitors landscapebudgets for specified locations.
  • Performs a variety of landscape maintenance duties including trimming, mowing, aerating, edging, hedging, watering, weeding, planting, mulching, renovating and chipping; assists with shrub trimming; uses equipment to remove and cut branches; fills in for and provides support to other grounds maintenance staff when needed
  • Maintains required records for use of pesticides, herbicides and fumigation, equipment maintenancerecords, irrigation repair/maintenanceand operationsrecords, tree and shrub inventory records;maintains equipment requests; creates and maintains records of work performed includingSchoolDuderecords.
  • Serves assecondaryon-call contact fortheGrounds Department at specified locations; provides 24-hour coverage for emergency and off-hour situations; contacts staff toresolve issuesor performs duties personally.
  • Demonstrates sensitivity to and understanding of historically minoritized groups and participates in professional development activities to increase cultural competency to enhance equity-minded practices within the District.

    OTHER DUTIES
  • Performs groundskeeping staff duties when required due toemployee absence or special circumstances.
  • Provides backup on-call support at all hours to other locations when primarycontact is unavailable.
  • Performsrelated duties as assigned.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
    Knowledge of:
  • Advancedgrounds maintenance procedures including mowing, edging, weeding, aerating and planting.
  • Cultivating, fertilizing, watering and spraying flowers, trees and shrubs.
  • Safe operation and maintenance of hand and power tools and equipment used in groundskeepingsuch as tractors, riding and standing mowers, excavators, trenchers, scissor and boom lifts, sweepers and pickups.
  • Safe operation of medium and heavy equipment used in groundskeeping.
  • Methods and materials used in controlling pests, insects and weeds.
  • Advancedmethods and procedures for the installation, maintenance and repair of irrigation systems.
  • Horticultural and nursery concepts and procedures.
  • Applicable athletic facility specifications and regulations such as NCAA requirements.
  • Applicable federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations,includingHealthy Schools Act,CaliforniaDepartment of Pesticide Regulation andOSHA rules and regulations.
  • Proper English usage including grammar, spelling and punctuation.
  • Safety policies and work practices applicable to the work being performed.
  • Basic principles and practices of employee work guidance and direction.
  • Board policies,Personnel Commission Rules, Administrative Regulations, Human Resources procedures and collective bargaining agreements.

    Skills andAbilitiesto:
  • Perform skilled grounds maintenance duties including prioritizing and scheduling work on campus grounds and athletic facilities.
  • Provide training and oversight to groundskeeping staff in all facets of work duties.
  • Mix and apply specialized chemicals to control and eradicate weeds, insects and other pest; ensure proper recordkeeping.
  • Operate all groundskeeping equipment and properly train others for certification.
  • Analyze problems, evaluate alternatives and recommend or adopt effective courses of action in accordance with established policies and procedures.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
    Graduation fromhigh school or GED equivalentand at leastfiveyears of progressively responsible experience ingrounds maintenance;or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

    LICENSES, CERTIFICATESAND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
    A validCaliforniadriver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under theDistrict'svehicle insurance program.
    A validCalifornia Department of Pesticide Regulation Qualified Applicator Certificate or License.Aerial work platform and powered industrial truck operator certificates.Annual completion of Healthy Schools Act training.

    The employee works in outside weather conditions including extreme heat; exposure to sun for extended periods of time;onslippery or uneven surfaces. The employeeworkswhile wearing personal protection equipment including respirators, protective gloves and footwear, face shields, goggles, spray suits and rain suits. The employee issubject to exposure to dust, dirt, oil/grease, gasoline, diesel fuel, smoke and pollen; to hazardous materials such as pesticides, herbicides, solvents and other toxic chemicals and fumes; to extreme noise and fumes/exhaust fromequipment and vehicle operation.     APPLICATION REVIEW AND ASSESSMENTS
    The application review process includes an evaluationof training and experience based on given application information and answers to supplemental questionnaire.Only the most qualified applicants, who pass the minimum qualifications review, will be invited to the assessment process.

    The assessment process will include an online competency assessment (50% weight) and an oral interview assessment (50% weight).Of those achieving a passing score on the competency assessment, only the 10 highest scoring candidates, plus ties, will be invited to the oral board interview assessment. Passing score is 75% out of 100% on each assessment section.

    ELIGIBILITY LIST
    Candidates who attain a passing score on each part of the assessment will be placed in rank order on district wide Open-Competitive List.Using the same process, a separate Promotional List will be established and both Lists will be used concurrently.Unless otherwise indicated, the eligibility list will be used to fill current vacancies for at least one year.
