The Extension Housing and Environmental Health Specialist, located within the Department of Health and Human Development, coordinates relevant and current information from a variety of sources to facilitate and deliver effective non-biased, researched-based housing programming in Montana. The Specialist develops appropriate educational programs and resources; assists in their delivery and evaluation throughout the state; provides Extension Agent training; conducts research and publishes as required by departmental promotion and tenure guidelines; prepares and manages grants; serves on university, state and national committees; and disseminates information to mass media related to Housing and Environmental Health. Program design should be responsive to changing state, county and national situations, and human needs.

This specialist is expected to develop a research and extension program, secure extramural funding, and publish research results in appropriate refereed and peer reviewed journals and extension publications; conduct workshops, webinars and presentations to agents and other constituents throughout Montana; provide materials and education to extension agents; conduct and interpret research related to housing and environmental health; collaborate with the MSU Weatherization Center faculty; lead and supervise program staff.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Ph.D. or Ed.D. with at least one degree in housing, environmental health, interior design or related field by the time of hire
  2. Strong record of academic achievement
  3. Ability to plan, organize, implement and evaluate educational programs
  4. Ability to develop scholarship in field of housing and/or environmental health as indicated by grant contracts, publications and/or presentations
  5. Demonstrated knowledge and skills in the use of information technologies for dissemination of educational information and educational programming

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Extension or teaching experience
  2. Experience writing and managing grants and contracts
  3. Experience managing employees

The successful candidate will: ~possess excellent human relation and written communication skills; have the ability to develop exemplary Extension, research and teaching programs; the ability to work effectively with other faculty and staff members; have evidence of good judgment; flexibility and innovativeness in order to respond to the changing needs of people in Montana; have the ability to work harmoniously with youth and adults on an individual and group basis; and will be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. The successful candidate will also have a familiarity with multi-cultural and different socioeconomic audiences, an interest in working with people from diverse backgrounds, a commitment to the principles of diversity and a commitment to excellence in extension programming.

This position is administratively responsible to the Health and Human Development Department Head and the Director of Extension.
