Salary:
Salary Range: $4,179 - $5,942 per month (anticipated hiring salary: $4,179 per month)

Note: This is a full-time (40 hours per week), probationary, exempt position

Organizational Description:
The College of Health and Human Services offers a broad range of fully accredited post-secondary and graduate educational programs to more than 4,700 students each year, attracting students from Merced County to the north to Kern County to the south, a 200-mile span.

The College is compromised of six departments and one school and offers quality instruction through nationally accredited programs. Our teaching facilities are continuously updated to reflect the technology in use at corporations, agencies, and institutions where our graduates are employed. The college supports student services that can provide quick and accessible academic advising. Our academic programs provide hands-on experience and skills, with the support of high tech training opportunities. In addition, faculty and students actively engage in interdisciplinary research in numerous institutes within the college.

The college of Health and human Services and its faculty and staff are dedicated to the preparation of competent health and human service professionals and to enhancing the quality of life and service delivery of the region and state.

Overview:
The Advising and Career Development Center in the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) is designed to provide exemplary advising and support to students in pursuit of academic degrees in CHHS majors and programs. Under general supervision of the Associate Dean of the College of Health and Human Services, this position is responsible for providing basic academic advisement and counseling services to support successful student transition to the university and retention through graduation.

Position Summary:
  • Maintain and update advisee records
  • Evaluate transcripts of incoming and continuing majors
  • Attend trainings to remain current on university policies/procedures and best practices in advising and student success
  • Provide supervision and training for peer mentor and interns
  • Represent College and University at recruitment events/fairs
  • Counsel and advise students on academic related issues, which affect their progression toward a degree objective
  • Provide quality student service as demonstrated in patience, tact, courtesy flexibility, and responsiveness to student needs
  • Review DPR reports and other information making decisions and applying sound judgment in complex situations
  • Make appropriate and effective referrals
  • Serve as an advocate for student and consult with faculty, staff, and others on issues associated with student academic performance
  • Calculate GPAs using basic math
  • Provide accurate information of degree requirements, academic policies, regulations, and university procedures
  • Prepare academic advising resource materials for faculty, staff, and students
  • Present advising information to groups ranging from 10 people to 200+
  • Maintain positive and effective working relationships with co-workers in a team oriented environment and other members of the university community

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Working knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of a university college or advising center
  • General knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management
  • General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior

    Ability to:
  • Interpret and apply program rules and regulations
  • Use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements
  • Obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews
  • Reason logically
  • Collect, compile, analyze, and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data
  • Advise students individually and in groups on routing matters where required
  • Recognize multicultural, multi-sexed, and multi-aged value systems and work accordingly
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts
  • Rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions, and programs of California State University, Fresno
  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas

    Education and Experience:
  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field
    o Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis
  • Equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field
    o A master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience
  • A history of regular attendance and positive performance reviews

    Preferred Skills:
  • Master's degree in counseling or related field
  • Knowledge of articulation, transfer policies and procedures, and admission requirements is highly desirable
  • Knowledge of issues relating to advising and careers in nursing and/or health and human services professions

    Ability to:
  • Provide clear, concise, accurate, and effective oral and written communication
  • Keep supervisor informed
  • Use sound judgment and problem-solving skills to recommend creative, effective, and practical solutions
  • Make appropriate and effective referrals
  • Serve as an advocate for students and consult with faculty, staff, and others on issues associated with student academic performance

    Demonstrated ability to:
  • Work with students from Underrepresented Minority (URM) groups and diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Provide quality student service as demonstrated in patience, tact courtesy, flexibility, and responsiveness to student needs
  • Make decisions and apply sound judgment in complex situations
  • Work in a multiple-task, fast-paced team-oriented environment
  • Use office automation software, electronic calendars, and generating brochures/flyers
  • Generate written correspondence in a professional manner without grammatical errors
  • Collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data
