Job Summary
The Rouf Lab in the Internal Medicine Department/Division of Cardiovascular Medicine is seeking a highly-motivated, independent, and bright experimentalist for a Research Laboratory Specialist position. This new lab at Michigan Medicine studies the role of nonmyocytes (i.e., fibroblast, endothelial, and immune cells) and sex differences in the pathogenesis of cardiomyopathy and valvular heart disease. Projects include genetic and pharmacologic targeting of cell-type specific pathways to ameliorate or reverse cardiovascular disease; characterization of cardiac and valvular phenotypes in murine models; and collaborative projects to recapitulate human cardiovascular disease in vitro to identify novel therapeutic agents. We are a highly collegial lab looking for an individual that contributes to a positive work environment.

The candidate's role will be to assist the laboratory director in managing multiple research projects and mentoring and training junior scientists in the lab. Additionally:

The successful candidate for this position will be well versed in preparing animal/IRB/IBC protocols and possess basic skills relevant to managing murine colonies, harvesting and processing murine tissue, cell isolation and culture, DNA/RNA/protein extraction from tissues and cells, immunoblot and qRT-PCR.
The successful candidate will also possess some advanced skills. Examples of desirable advanced skills include experience in: methods in the use and optimization of lineage tracing tools; IF/confocal microscopy, FACS, RNA in situ hybridization; microdissection/microsurgical skills; designing and optimizing murine drug studies (via subcutaneous pellet/pump, intraperitoneal, intravenous, oral gavage drug delivery).
*Knowledge of cardiac physiology and biology is a plus but not required.*
Additional responsibilities may include minimal work with leukocyte and DNA isolation from human blood.

The individual will be a key member of a team of investigators and work very closely with the laboratory director and collaborators. Depending on stage and productivity there will be opportunities to participate in assembling manuscripts and attending national meetings.

The laboratory director is an advanced heart failure physician-scientist at the Frankel Cardiovascular Center with extensive training in molecular biology and engineering approaches to understanding pathobiology of cardiovascular disease. This position offers the benefits of an independent spacious lab location at the North Campus Research Complex which has an on-site gym, exercise classes and childcare. Lab members will meet with the laboratory director weekly which provides opportunities for further discussion about many scientific topics including heritable cardiomyopathy, heart failure, valvular heart disease, and strategies to elucidate the role of sex differences in these cardiovascular diseases.

Responsibilities*
The successful candidate is required to function as a manager and research specialist in a cardiovascular research laboratory. The successful candidate is expected to work independently or with minimal supervision and to carry out the following duties:

Conduct in vivo and in vitro experiments, collect and analyze data, and develop new and/or specialized research methodologies.
Be the primary point person responsible for general lab support, equipment maintenance, supplies, inventory, and organization.
Disseminate information to laboratory staff through data analysis and presentation and assist with abstract, manuscript, grant, and budget preparation.
Assist in the supervision and training of junior scientists (temp employees, students, junior technicians, and postdoctoral fellows) in experimental approaches and safe use of equipment.
Prepare and update regulatory protocols and revisions (i.e. animal/IRB/IBC protocols, IACUC, EHS, etc).
Maintain a transgenic mouse colony.
Administer therapeutic drugs via subcutaneous pellet/pump, intraperitoneal, oral gavage and intravenous delivery.
Harvest murine tissue via microsurgical techniques.
Keep neat, detailed records, experimental procedure logs, mouse colony logs and protocols.

Required Qualifications*

Bachelors's degree or higher in a biological science or related field with at least 2 years of relevant experience in a research laboratory.
- Associate Level: 2-3 years in a research laboratory with relevant experience.
- Intermediate Level: >4 years of experience in a research laboratory with relevant experience.
Physical requirements: ability to reach by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction; finger dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm; ability to see and hear within normal parameters, lift, carry, move supplies, computers, glassware, etc. ability to move about workspace, ability to perform delicate microdissection and microsurgeries.
Mouse experience is mandatory. Must be able to handle rodents and comfortably perform in an environment with exposure to animals, animal dander, animal byproducts, and bedding materials.
Working knowledge of laboratory best practices is essential.
Experience with basic molecular and cellular biology techniques and tools.
Must be detail-oriented, highly responsible, and possess excellent organizational, interpersonal, and written and oral communication skills to present research at group meetings.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research team and meet deadlines.
Ability to organize and analyze experimental data using basic computer software such as Microsoft Excel and Graphpad Prism.

Desired Qualifications*
Master's or PhD in biological sciences with 4-5 years of demonstrated research experience through publications strongly preferred. Knowledge of cancer or matrix biology is a plus. Knowledge of cardiac physiology and biology is a plus but not required.
