Salary
Salary Range: $70,000-$75,000/Annualized, commensurate with education, experience and qualifications.

Hours per Week
Exempt Position: 40 hours per week.

Essential Functions
Function: To provide professional editorial skills and supervision for the design, preparation and quality control of the university magazine and internal communications content.

Scope: Oversees the content creation and editing of print and electronic media production.

Typical:
  1. Administers and manages the daily operations of University Strategic Communications' editorial staff.
  2. In a collaborative environment, ideates compelling print and digital content that aligns to the university's strategic priorities.
  3. Creates editorial calendars, supervises writing assignments and leads staff in the timely development of print and digital content of the highest quality.
  4. Writes, edits, compiles data/facts, revises and proofreads news and feature articles for style, clarity, voice, tone, grammar and punctuation to meet publication standards of the highest quality.
  5. Manages production schedules including coordination with printer(s), mail vendor(s) and internal distribution sources; coordinates and attends photo shoots, press checks, etc.
  6. Oversees the appearance, design and layout of the university's print and digital channels, including Sombrilla magazine, UTSA Today and other institutional publications.
  7. Provides leadership in the development and execution of internal communications plans; serves as University Strategic Communications' internal communications lead for the oversight, coordination and completion of campus-wide internal communications initiatives and projects.
  8. Gathers content for, builds, tests and distributes institutional internal communications.
  9. Actively raises awareness of and engagement with University Strategic Communications' print and digital channels by leveraging innovative digital assets, identifying and implementing innovative new opportunities to package and deliver editorial content, and developing and executing marketing plans for the channels.
  10. Monitors current trends in print and digital content creation, curation and delivery.
  11. Develops regular metrics reports (daily, weekly, monthly, annual) to demonstrate the impact of University Strategic Communications internal communications and publications functions.
  12. Works with campus constituents including vice presidents, deans, and directors and external partners and supporters on editorial content and story development.
  13. Assists in the development and administration of University Strategic Communications policies.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned.

Periodic:
  1. Serves on committees.
  2. Attends industry seminars.
  3. Produces departmental reports.

Required Qualifications
  • Requires a Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Communication or a related field.
  • Seven years of experience editing and writing in a corporate, university, nonprofit public affairs office, or a newspaper or advertising agency, including a minimum of two years supervising staff and providing editorial direction.
  • Demonstrated experience with magazine design/layout.
  • Use of standard office equipment, personal computer, software programs and other design tools.
  • Skilled in the use of publishing software.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in English, Journalism, Communication or related field.
  • Similar experience, including three years editing content of a complex technical or scientific nature.
  • Three or more years of experience with magazine design/layout.
  • Experience working with community leaders and prominent donors.

Working Conditions
  • Normal office and workshop environments.
  • Some overtime may be required. Occasional travel may be required.

This position will be primarily located:

Hybrid-Regularly: This position will require working both remotely and on campus (approximately five or more days on campus per month). Travel and parking expenses are the employee's responsibility. Applicants must be adaptable and open to working in both environments.
