Overview:

Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Student Success Services, the director has the primary responsibility for providing vision, leadership, and management of programs and services designed to facilitate student learning and promote student success. This includes tutorial services, academic skills workshops, supplemental instruction and an early alert program (SupportNet). The director also serves on campus wide committees designed to coordinate campus student success efforts.

Compensation:

The salary is competitive and is negotiable depending on the strength of qualifications. This is a CSU Management Personnel Plan (MPP) position with an attractive benefits package which includes but is not limited to: a vacation accrual rate of 16 hours per month; 12+ paid holidays; excellent choice of medical, dental and vision insurance, long term disability coverage, life insurance; and retirement benefits.

Anticipated Salary: $60,000 - $70,000

Position Summary:

Major duties of the job include:

  • Provide management to the development and implementations of innovative strategies to support student learning and retention through graduation
  • Collaborate with academic departments and support programs to develop and implement innovative programs and strategies to support student learning in the classroom
  • Oversee the development of a comprehensive tutor training program and the expansion of supplemental instruction and SupportNet (early alert program)
  • Provide group and individual student advising on personal development, learning skills, and academic issues
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive assessment plan to improve services and gauge the effectiveness of programs and services
  • Budget planning and fiscal management for the Learning Center, the Tutor Center, and SupportNet
  • Provide leadership in the development and implementation of training for tutors, supplemental instruction peers, and other student assistants in the department
  • Supervise and evaluate professional, administrative, and student support staff
  • Provide supervision of staff assigned to implement and maintain student retention software

    Secondary duties of the job include:

  • Work closely with Academic Affairs and other Student Affairs programs and departments to develop partnerships, services, and activities which support student retention and graduation
  • Conduct research on how students learn and use knowledge to develop and expand learning assistance programs and services
  • Work to ensure quality control in services offered through the Learning Center
  • Seek grant-funding opportunities to supplement funding for the Learning Center
  • Perform other duties appropriate to the position as assigned by the Associate Vice President for Student Success Services

    Qualifications:

    Minimum Requirements: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of learning theory and sensitivity to issues and needs of students from low-income, diverse ethnic, and cultural backgrounds
  • Highly developed leadership and supervisory skills in applying sounds personnel practices and procedures
  • Strong problem-solving and conflict resolution skills
  • Solid interpersonal skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Proven ability to manage a service-oriented learning center
  • Knowledge of statistical and research methods
  • Demonstrated ability to do the following:
  • Develop, organize, implement, and evaluate programs which support student learning and development
  • Reach practical, logical, objective decisions and put effective changes into practice

    Ability to do the following:
  • Advise student individually or in groups on varied and complex matters
  • Work independently and as a part of a team and able to develop consensus through collegial consultation
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships

    Education and Experience

  • A master's degree
  • A minimum of three years of progressively responsible management experience in a student service program such as a Learning Center or tutorial program and experience with program development, evaluation, fiscal management, and supervision

    Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with web-based management systems such as PeopleSoft and GradesFirst
  • Previous experience teaching learning skills or developmental classes
  • Strong foundation in human development and educational learning theories
