The Lead Accessibility Engineer is IAAP Web Accessibility Specialist (WAS) certified or a Certified Professional in Web Accessibility (CPWA) and responsible for monitoring, interpreting and ensuring compliance to accessibility standards, including American Disability Act Section 508, W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 (WCAG), and others, for APEI Digital Assets. The individual in this role must have experience leading teams, but also the possess the ability to work independently. This role will lead the accessibility analysis, documentation, development, and remediation of APEI's web properties. Additionally, this individual will be responsible for the execution and oversight of accessibility validation as well as training staff and faculty involved in the development of digital materials, media, and technology. The ideal candidate is an excellent communicator and well versed in explaining and implementing accessibility and digital disability standards, regulations, and best practices including Section 508, W3C WCAG.

Responsibilities:
    • Lead and assist in the definition, creation, documentation and execution of processes for ADA compliance issue discovery, resolution and exceptions based on levels of risk (High, Medium, Low).
    • Create and implement processes to ensure products, technologies, and systems are routinely audited and evaluated for accessibility legal coverage and assessed for levels of risk.
    • Coordinate and execute accessibility training, ensuring that accessibility training is provided to and completed by necessary departmental representatives.
    • Execute compliance scans, analyze results, document and assign issue for resolution.
    • Collaborate with IT to support development initiatives, ensuring accessibility is considered a business requirement for any new project and that it is built into the developmental framework and SDLC.
    • Work with Disability (Student) Services to support accessibility requirements across all of APEI's relevant digital environments.
    • Establish and nurture relevant external relationships with business partners, suppliers, disability advocacy groups, standards development groups, and other industry/accessibility organizations to support organizational goals.
    • Perform analysis of third-party supplier solutions and services for accessibility.
    • Define and develop reporting for APEI's accessibility compliance team, management, and legal.
    • Define and gather accessibility metrics, establishing benchmarks to measure program/project success and ROI over time.

    Education and Experience:
    • IAAP Web Accessibility Specialist (WAS) certified, and preference given to a Certified Professional in Web Accessibility (CPWA)
    • Associates or Bachelors in computer science, information technology, human computer interaction, or related field.
    • A minimum of 10 years in Information Technology, including 4+ years leading teams and coordinate testing and remediation efforts of enterprise level projects.
    • 5+ years of specific experience preparing, testing, and correcting websites and digital properties for accessibility based on ADA and WCAG guidelines and standards.
    • Experience testing electronic documents (PDF, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) for digital accessibility based on ADA and WCAG standards.
    • Ability to perform complete audits and validation testing on websites for digital accessibility based on ADA and WCAG guidelines and standards.
    • Knowledge of accessibility standards and Section 508/WCAG requirements for web development. IT software, and electronic documents.
    • Experience with Accessibility Testing tools (i.e. AMP, etc.)
    • Strong understanding of html, css and software development principles.
    • High proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and Adobe Acrobat Professional.
    • Excellent verbal, technical writing and communications skills.
