Full Salary Range: $2,170.14 - $2,901.53 (per month)
NOTE: The salary advertised with this position is based on the 2017-2018 salary schedule. Effective July 1,2018 through June 30, 2019, the position will receive an additional temporary 5% increase. On July 1, 2019 salaries will revert to the 2017-2018 salary schedule unless another agreement is reached.

JOB SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Dean of Physical Science, Math and Engineering, the staff member will prepare all laboratories for the instructional program. Preparation will include: 1) purchasing chemicals and supplies as needed; 2) preparation of solutions according to specifications; and 3) distribution of chemicals for student use. All preparation is to be completed in a timely manner according to instructional schedules and under the direction of faculty. In addition, the staff member will maintain complete, up-to-date records relating to: 1) notes regarding preparation of chemicals or solutions for each instructional class; 2) purchase orders, receipts, warranties, and equipment maintenance procedures; 3) computerized inventory of all supplies, equipment, chemicals, and Material Safety Data Sheets; 4) student lockers, keys, and student equipment checkout; and 5) time sheets for student stockroom support. Additional duties include processing purchase orders in accordance with departmental budget, overseeing and/or performing maintenance of equipment and instrumentation, and arranging repairs as needed. More generally, the staff member will oversee stockroom planning and space utilization and develop written guidelines for stockroom procedures such as student check-in, key distribution, and student check-in/out of special equipment. Finally, the staff member will provide guidance to the chemistry department in the management of hazardous waste, ensure compliance with local, state and federal (OSHA) safety regulations for laboratory and stockroom, and perform related duties as assigned.

DEFINITION:
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, perform a variety of duties in support of an assigned laboratory; order, receive, store, maintain, and issue laboratory supplies and equipment.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Depending upon assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  1. Assist students with utilizing lab instruments, materials, and equipment in a safe and proper manner; answer technical questions; tutor students in assigned lab as necessary; demonstrate proper use of equipment and materials.
  2. Prepare and set up tools, equipment and materials for demonstrations, experiments, or instruction for the assigned lab; inspect lab for safety hazards and make corrections as necessary; demonstrate safety procedures as necessary.
  3. Order, issue and inventory supplies and equipment; assure the safe and proper storage of supplies, materials and equipment.
  4. Prepare and maintain a variety of records related to assigned laboratory duties.
  5. Operate a variety of assigned laboratory equipment specific to the assignment; perform minor repairs as needed.
  6. Perform administrative duties as assigned; monitor assigned budget expenditures.
  7. Communicate with other departments to exchange information and provide technical support as necessary; monitor the progress of students and discuss with faculty as needed.
  8. Attend various meetings as required.
  9. Perform a variety of clerical duties related to the assigned instructional laboratory.
  10. Monitor and provide direction to student assistants as assigned.
  11. Perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.
  2. Any combination equivalent to an Associate's degree in an assigned area of expertise, or related field AND three (3) years related instructional laboratory experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Successful completion of courses and associated laboratory sessions in: general chemistry (1 year), organic chemistry (1 year), and one of the following: analytical chemistry, instrumental analysis, or upper division spectroscopy.
  2. Undergraduate degree in physical science (BA/BS).
  3. Experience supervising a laboratory or chemical stockroom.
  4. Knowledge of and experience with hazardous waste management, including OSHA and related safety regulations and procedures with respect to chemistry laboratories and stockrooms.
  5. Knowledge of and experience with equipment/ instrument maintenance for such equipment such as analytical balances, GC, HPLC, FT-IR, spectrometer, polarimeters, and NMR (60 MHZ) Spectrometer.
  6. Experience with large-scale solution and reagent preparation including solution standardization.
  7. Ability to demonstrate a proficiency in computer applications such as Microsoft Office.
  8. Demonstrated ability to prepare a budget for equipment and supplies.
  9. Knowledge of or experience with maintaining an inventory of chemicals and safety equipment.
  10. Demonstrated ability to oversee the proper disposal of laboratory waste and facilitate work done by waste contractor.

Position: Part-Time, Grant Funded, 11-months per year

Work Schedule: Monday - Thursday, 2:00PM - 6:00PM and Friday - Saturday, 4 hours (to be determined).
