About Eastern Washington University:

Job Summary:
* Eastern Washington University is currently seeking to hire an Industrial Hygienist 2.
* This position conducts inspections and/or investigations of an employer's work place to assess existing and potential health hazards and determines compliance with standards for safety and health hazards. Assists employer by ensuring compliance with general duty clauses, employee safety laws and regulations; and University policies. Under direction, exercises compliance authority in issuing corrective actions and findings; including orders and notices of immediate restraint. Conduct field and laboratory investigations of facilities, equipment, and environment to assess occupational hygiene hazards, or conducts evaluations of work places to assess existing and potential occupational health hazards.

Required Qualifications:
* Bachelors degree involving major study in occupational safety and/or a health or science related field AND
1 year of experience as an industrial hygienist, safety and health manager, safety and health consultant, or as a chemist or engineer working on environmental health or air sanitation problems.
* Masters degree involving major study in industrial hygiene or related field will substitute for 1 year or experience
* Possession of a valid drivers license is required.
* Candidate must demonstrate interest, ability and/or experience promoting cultural competency, universal accessibility and/or diversity.
Preferred Qualifications:
* Relevant work experience in a Higher Education setting.
Other Skills and Abilities:
Ability to use power hand tools, hand tools, fall restraint devices, supplied air
compressors, mobile elevating work platforms, forklifts, confined space extraction equipment, ventilation fans, IH sampling equipment/ pumps for testing and monitoring, fumehoods, bio-safety
cabinets, various industrial machinery.
Ability to wear a respirator and other safety equipment for longer periods of time as needed for emergency response. Ability to obtain HAZWOPER certification, AHERA Building Inspector, AHERA Management planner within the first six months of employment. Proficient knowledge in the use MS Word, Excel, Access, Adobe Creative Suite computer programs, Word Press and ability to learn other software
programs as needed(Labcup, Peoples Admin). Ability to complete OSHA 30 Hr. General Industry, CPR First Aid and additional safety training as required by safety compliance.
Ability to speak in front of an audience. Versatile communication skills with the ability to relay safety information to different educational levels of audience. Ability to review/draft/compose health and safety documentation, procedures and guidance documents to align with regulatory
requirements. Knowledge of: sampling and direct measuring techniques for chemical and physical hazards, noise and non-ionizing radiation; industrial processes
and occupational hazards; common industrial chemicals, chemical by-products and their air contamination potential; hazard potential of dusts, gases, vapors, noise and non-ionizing radiation; routine analytical procedures.
Ability to: explain technical procedures and findings in language a lay person can understand, establish and maintain effective working relationships with representatives of management and labor; use industrial hygiene sampling equipment such as gas and vapor detectors, noise dosimeters and
direct reading instruments; speak effectively; write clear, concise reports. Ability to use and apply legal theory in decision-making.
The above additional skills will assist with conducting safety inspections and compliance audits as well as safety training for various facility shops and academic departments on campus.

Responsibility / Duty: Inspections and Sampling
Document and record measurement, calculations, evaluation, and preparation of data in electronic, oral, or written reporting concerning environmental and worker exposures for occupational health hazards:
Sample discovery and monitoring of worker and/or building material contaminants and hazards with use of measuring/ monitoring equipment for:
o Asbestos; pre-abatement, bulk, clearance, and personal
o Crystalline Silica
o Dusts and other related indoor air quality media
o Fungi
o Fumes/ vapors
o Heavy metals
o Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs)
o Unknown chemicals or release media
o Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)
Conduct inspections of campus buildings, infrastructure, equipment, laboratories, mechanical, project, and shop areas for health or physical hazards
Assist in evaluation and categorization of wastes for campus waste disposal
Recognize and measure environmental (i.e. temperature, light, humidity, pressure, etc.) and physical hazards for maintaining worker health; to include audiometric exposures for dangerous noise levels; identification of potential confined spaces and oxygen-deficient atmospheres
Manage calibrations, maintenance schedules, and service RMAs for compliant and regular monitoring/ sampling equipment operations
Investigate, record, and follow-up with serious worker injury/illnesses; as to coordinate with EWU Human Resources, Campus Police, and related departments
Reviews constructions plans, proposed project work, and/or worker job function for exposure to existing or new risks associated with the work to be performed; may mitigate hazards by proposing engineering, administrative controls, or personal protective equipment
Conducts ergonomic assessments of worker environments and equipment; may recommend need based equipment or corrective measures for worker accommodations

Responsibility / Duty: Reporting and Database Management
Performance of other regular duties to include database management and sample recall for:
Record analytical sampling storage and chain of custody production/ report tracking for potential worker exposures and building systems
Document campus facilities safety findings
Perform campus safety device tracking to include:
o eye wash/ showers
o fire alarm/ extinguishing systems
o gas detection meters
Facilitate departmental monthly, quarterly, and annual tracking reports
Retrieve and maintain DMR/waste water discharges; Spokane Regional Clean Air Agency database entry, Abatement/ permitting sample and worker clearances for Labor and Industries and OSHA
Create and update monitoring/ sample equipment calibrations and lists
Share recording duties and preparation of documents concerning EWU employee medical evaluations for:
o job hazard section of Essential Functions Analyses
o job-related inoculations and pre-employment medical testing/ review
o respiratory fit-test program and equipment
Manage student/ worker/ visitor injury and illness reporting program
Communicate and report findings to administration, affected workers and supervisor for conclusive information regarding investigations and outcomes compliance to State of Washington codes and regulations; Eastern Washington University policies.

Responsibility / Duty: Laboratory, Chemical, and Biological Safety
Promote the safe use of chemicals and biological materials at EWU. Ensure all employees with potential exposure to chemicals and/or biological materials are trained to understand the hazards and know the equipment and work practices necessary for safety.
Assist Biological Safety Officer for Institutional Biosafety Committee
Assist in management of the Chemical Hazard Communication Program, the Bloodborne Pathogen Program, and the Hazardous Waste Management Program
Inspect laboratories to identify safety and regulatory compliance issues; communicate findings to appropriate individuals, administrative groups, and departments
Liaise with EWU departments and shops to improve safety practices and procedures
Train employees and students in laboratory, chemical, and biological safety
Test laboratory safety equipment to ensure appropriate operation and alert necessary shops and departments to ensure repairs are made for any malfunctioning equipment
Assist with storage, designation, and disposal of hazardous waste, biological waste, and universal waste
Assist with response to and clean-up of chemical and biological incidents
Assist with implementation and management of a chemical inventory and SDS program
Maintain documents and records according to regulations and retention policies

o Hazardous Material Transport
Required annualized Environmental Health and Safety program trainings; University trainings
Assist and collaborate with co-worker for training implementation and instruction content and coverage to campus personnel through:
o defining department training schedules, annual requirements, and offered EH&S training classes
o procedure and guidance documents
o shared EH&S WordPress website management and operation; social media
Contribute in the processing of departmental service requests, inquiries, and visiting support staff/ vendors to offices; Notify colleagues of immediate concerns, equipment failure, and safety related issues found throughout campuses
Support departmental staff with communications, operational needs, and organizational management of office resources
Prepare training materials and supplies; Identification of missing or needed resources for operation of departmental unit
