Position Summary
The Human Resources Labor & Employee Relations Specialist works under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of Labor & Employee Relations, to assist in a variety of Human Resources activities.


Essential Functions
  • Provides the Fordham Community with sound recommendations regarding labor and employee relations matters, performance counseling, employee disputes, employee discipline and separations.
  • Ensures positive labor/management relationships and aids in the interpretation of the Collective Bargaining Agreements and Administrative Policies.
  • Is the first point of contact for special projects upon request by University departments as a dedicated Human Resources specialist:
    • Ensures that all internal departmental policies, practices, processes, and guidelines are compliant with laws and regulations. Assists with drafting, implementation and interpretation of policies, processes, and guidelines at departmental level;
    • Assist with departments specific recruiting and on-boarding efforts of newly hired staff and administrators in order to enhance the new employees experience during the introductory period ;
    • Conducts workplace investigations under the University Policy and Procedures against Harassment, Discrimination and Retaliation in Employment, the University Code of Conduct, and other relevant policies. Interviews complainants, respondents, and witnesses; drafts final investigative reports; discusses outcome and remediation steps with leadership.
    • Assists department leaders in matters relating to stakeholders feedback (e.g., students) or special programs), and recommends strategies to improve implementation and creation of successful departmental programs. Advises leadership on how to resolve personnel performance issues, employee discipline and disputes;
    • Recommends training modules and workshops to enhance compliance and create a culture of excellence.


  • Assists the Assistant VP for Human Resources and the Assistant Director with their calendar and to coordinate/schedule investigative interviews with staff, faculty, students etc.
  • Accurately records minutes during workplace investigation meetings, labor/employee relations conferences, union contract negotiations, etc.
  • Performs a variety of research to support the HR compliance function.
  • Assists in the implementation of new labor tracking software. Responsible for data entry and record maintenance in the labor tracking software.
  • Serves as a back-up for the leave administration program and the workplace accommodations process.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree required, Masters degree or JD preferred.
  • 1-2 years experience in a Human Resource Labor & Employee Relations position required.
  • Ability to handle sensitive matters with confidentiality and diplomacy.
  • Demonstrated organizational, administrative, and project management skills.
  • Self-starter who can work independently and produce creative solutions.
  • Proficient in the use of the Microsoft Suite.
  • Accurately scribe contents of sensitive meetings and union negotiations.
  • Competency in navigating computer software programs and systems.





Preferred Qualifications
  • Higher education experience
  • Professional HR generalist certifications are highly desirable, including Society of Human Resources Management: Senior/Professional in Human Resources (SPHR/PHR), or Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP/CP) preferred. Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations: Advanced Certificate in Employee Relations and Investigation
