Job Description

The Executive Director for the Innovation Commercialization Entrepreneurship and Economic Development (ICEED) Center, provides leadership for the implementation and success of the ICEED center under general direction of the Vice President for Research & Innovation (VPRI) and the Assistant Vice President (AVP). The Executive Director reports to the Assistant Vice President for Research and Innovation. The Executive Director is responsible for significantly increasing the innovation, commercialization, and entrepreneurship portfolio of PVAMU. The Executive Director, provides leadership for ICEED Center functions to include planning, directing, and managing and evaluating center's operations with the goal of nurturing and strengthening the innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystem campus-wide to promote economic growth at the local, state and national levels. Provides oversight of business activities, strategic planning and development, and program administration. Functions as center liaison to stakeholders and represents the University in related areas. The Executive Director will carry out the ICEED center's mission and objectives consistent with PVAMU's strategic vision through the management of the center activity, innovation, commercialization, entrepreneurism and related outreach services of the Center. The Director also facilitates the development of the needed policies and procedures. The Director develops negotiation strategies by evaluating risks and potentials of the partnerships. Assesses potential third party industries in terms of revenue potential and mission fit. Evaluates, determines, and realizes quarterly commercialization and entrepreneurship partnership growth goals.

This position is funded by a grant or restrict funds. Continued employment is contingent on the renewal of grant or restricted funding.

Responsibilities:
  • Administration: Provides leadership for ICEED Center functions to include planning, developing, directing, managing, and administer Center's operations including executing center's mission and goals, creating strategic planning and road-maps, programmatic initiatives, personnel supervision, IP inventory management and data-driven reporting, creating policies and procedures, promotional communications, and fiscal management, for significantly increasing the innovation, commercialization, and entrepreneurship portfolio of PVAMU.
  • Innovation: Provide the full-cycle services to establish the intellectual property (IP) infrastructure including, offering regular innovation training and workshops; and increasing the invention disclosures, provisional patents and full patents, for significantly increasing the PVAMU's innovation portfolio.
  • Commercialization: Provide the full-cycle services to establish the commercialization and licensing infrastructure including, offering regular commercialization workshops to inventors; initiating and establishing commercialization proposals, partnerships, MOU's, licensing contracts, for significantly increasing the PVAMU's commercialization portfolio.
  • Entrepreneurship: Provide the full-cycle services to establish the entrepreneurship infrastructure including, offering regular entrepreneurship workshops, lead and direct entrepreneurship competitions, assist to establish start-up companies, establish and manage a venture capital and investor network, for significantly increasing the PVAMU's entrepreneurship portfolio.
  • Stewardship: Serves as a liaison with leadership and coordinates working relationships with academic and non-academic units of the University, and foster university relationships with industries and private sectors. Assists the Vice President and the Assistant Vice President on a variety of internal and external issues related the centers mission and goals, for significantly increasing the innovation, commercialization, and entrepreneurship portfolio of PVAMU. Develops negotiation strategies by evaluating risks and potentials of the partnerships. Assesses potential third party industries in terms of revenue potential and mission fit. Evaluates, determines, and realizes quarterly commercialization and entrepreneurship partnership growth goals.


Required Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Five years of progressive and successful administrative experience in business development and new partnership development, as well as a working knowledge of intellectual property management in a university, industry, or government environment.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Masters or a terminal degree in relevant discipline is preferred.
  • Seven or more years of progressive and successful management experience in business development and new partnership development, as well as a working knowledge of intellectual property management in a university, industry, or government environment.
  • In depth knowledge and proficiency in activities related to research based innovation, commercialization, and entrepreneurship.
  • Ability to translate objectives into a schedule and series of activities to meet the requirements.
  • Detail-oriented, with excellent time management skills and confidence working in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Exceptional persuasive writing skills to craft a clear story.
  • Excellent editorial skills, with ability to consistently apply in-house and client styles.
  • Experience with editing and publishing techniques, including the ability to operate PC-based software and hardware.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, and familiarity with SharePoint and Adobe Creative Suite is preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build rapport.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously with ability to be flexible and adapt to changing priorities and assignments.
  • Ability to work on a team, either in a support function or as a project leader.
  • Willingness to work and deliver on short notice.
