Responsibilities:

The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist supports the laboratory safety, hazardous material, occupational health and environmental management programs in laboratories and other facilities throughout campus. Key work includes inspections and consultations in laboratories, shops and hazardous waste management facilities; laboratory checkouts; evaluation and inspection of safety equipment; maintaining emergency response supplies and equipment; and support and maintenance of hazardous materials and waste related databases and documentation.

Laboratory safety management presents challenges where problems encountered are often non-routine, requiring review of practices and precedents to recommend effective remedy. Often, precedents generally do not exist for most problems, thus this position requires conducting independent research/analysis to identify appropriate approach

Qualifications:

Education: Bachelors degree required in one of the physical sciences, life sciences, environmental science, applied health science, or other applicable degree. Interest in a professional certification such as a Certified Safety Profession, Certified Industrial Hygienist, or Certified Hazardous Material Manager is highly desirable.
Experience: Two+ years work experience in environmental health and safety in higher education is preferred. Knowledge of laboratory safety and environmental regulations is highly desired. May substitute required experience with equivalent years of education beyond the minimum education requirement.

Knowledge of:
Laboratory facilties and inspection/audit procedures
Laboratory equipment including safety showers, eyewashes and chemical fume hoods
Chemical hazards and chemical risk assessment, safe chemical use and handling, and how academic laboratories operate
Regulatory requirements associated with laboratory safety, chemical use, occupational health, and environmental management
The needs of chemical laboratories and other EH&S programs to ensure that the chemical management services function provides maximum benefit to the university

Skills:
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Excellent problem solving and orngaizational skills
Proficiency in use of a personal computer and current software applications including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and e-mail).
Proficiency in the use of data management software
Personnel management
Strong interpersonal skills
Recognition of laboratory hazards, assessment of risks, and identification of effective risk management controls
Have or be able to obtain within three months of hire: 24 Hour HAZWOPPER certification

Ability to:
Interact effectively with faculty, staff and students during various inspections and consultations
Recruit inventory team members and ensure that personnel are trained with regard to inventory methods, safe handling of chemicals, entry of data into an electronic database, and laboratory etiquette
Work effectively and productively with other EH&S staff, laboratory personnel, facilities support personel; ITS personnel, and regulators
Evaluate laboratories for unsafe conditions and practices, and identify opportunities to reduce risks
Identify effective and feasible laboratory risk reduction methods
Operate instrumentation required to monitor personnel chemical exposures and evaluate monitoring results
Be medically qualified to wear respiratory protection and other personal protective equipment
Lift up to 50 lbs and move up to 500 lbs of materials using rolling carts or drum carts.
Work in a variety of physical environments including weather extremes, potential confined spaces, elevated locations, and where the use of hazardous chemicals or equipment is in storage or use.
