General Description
College of the Sequoias Community College District is seeking an equity-minded candidate to fill a temporary, one year, full-time Distance Education Coordinator. Under the direction of the Director, LRC, the Distance Education Coordinator (DE Coordinator) will design, implement, coordinate, and evaluate the COS distance learning program; assist faculty in converting courses from face-to-face to distance modalities and in creating courses that are dynamic, engaging, rigorous, and educationally grounded in the latest pedagogy and technology for online and distance education. The DE Coordinator will identify technology solutions and distance education resources to support existing and emerging learning environments, sustain working relationships respectful of diversity; and provide direction to the college in its development and support of distance education. The focus is online, remote, hybrid and traditional classroom-based learning environments committed to equity, access, cultural wealth, and student achievement. The DE Coordinator serves as the content expert for online/distance learning and training for the District with an emphasis on universal design and equity. Participation in the governance of the District by way of committee assignments is expected. Other responsibilities include maintenance of a number of office hours, full participation in departmental responsibilities, and the willingness to create and/or participate in and sustain an atmosphere of equity, justice, and appreciation for diversity throughout the college.

Job Duties

Coordinate the delivery of distance education courses within and among divisions. Work with faculty to expand online offerings and to add courses in new areas that are not currently represented in the online environment and participate in the development and review of curriculum
Collaborate with applicable campus constituencies to maintain and enhance a COS distance learning portal that provides for centralized and coordinated online support services and resources that are effective and engaging for students (including but not limited to, library services, counseling, orientation, disability awareness and access, transfer guidance) and for instructors (including but not limited to workshops, online tech support, orientations, disability accommodations, support for broad student access, library of tutorials, and successful methodologies).
Assist in the selection of appropriate teaching methodologies and provide resources for pedagogical support to achieve student learning outcomes
Assist in faculty development of course design that promotes effective communication (i.e. initial contact, regular and effective contact, instructor feedback, documentation) and compliance with accessibility requirements.
Coordinate and provide instructional design services for faculty to support the use of high-quality online and distance education instruction and Learning Management Systems.
Model the integration of the basic principles of instructional design into their own classroom, training/workshops, and collaborative projects with faculty, students, and staff.
Coordinate and implement training of online faculty certification process.
Design and facilitate training (workshops and courses), demonstrations and ongoing follow-up support including mentorships and organized peer partnerships for faculty on a wide range of topics in support of distance education.
Collaborate with the Faculty Enrichment Committee, Educational Technology Committee, and Educational Support Services staff on the development and implementation of training programs for students and faculty as needed.

Act as the primary liaison between the college and the California Community College Chancellor's Office on matters of distance education.
Work with Academic Senate in identifying the need for effective distance education standards and in identifying policies, procedures, and guidelines.
Contribute to the development of accreditation requirements of ACCJC and assist with drafting materials to be included in the self-study document in coordination with the Accreditation Liaison Officer and the Accreditation Steering Committee.
Serve as a point of contact with third-party Distance Education technology system/service providers.
Conduct technical research to match faculty pedagogical needs with available technologies and participate in the evaluation, selection, testing and implementation of hardware and software tools, technologies and services that empower faculty and enhance teaching/learning experiences and student services.
Facilitate online education troubleshooting, system, and technology support.
Work collegially with the campus community in setting direction for needs assessments, curriculum development, effective pedagogies, distance education modes, faculty training, instructional design support, and distance education policies.
Attend conferences, workshops, and institutes to stay current in innovations and best practices in distance education. Inform the campus community of appropriate findings.
Initiate advertising on campus and into the larger COS service area to attract students and faculty alike into distance learning and distance teaching opportunities.
Participate in the preparation and composition of status reports for ongoing projects, assist with grants and special programs, including proposals and applications, related to the enhancement of educational technology, distance education, and online instructional design.
Engage in data inquiry and self-assessment to develop strategies for student success, persistence, and equity.
Provide discipline specific instruction in accordance with established course outlines and expectations.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

The candidate must meet the following criteria. The degree must be from an institution accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges or the equivalent.

Any Master's Degree
Distance Education Certification
Experience with Learning Management Systems
Experience teaching in an online environment
Experience with the use of technology in the delivery of content and instruction
Successful faculty training experience AND must have equity mindedness and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students

The equivalent

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree in Instructional Design/Technology or Educational Technology Experience with Canvas Learning Management Systems.
Community college teaching experience.

Desirable Qualifications:

Extensive experience in instructional design, educational technology, and/or online learning development AND related Learning Management Systems (e.g. Canvas).
Current technology skills related to teaching in the discipline and a willingness to pursue future technological developments.
At least one year of experience working collaboratively with administration, faculty, and staff on the development of online courses
At least one year of experience with innovative teaching methods and curriculum development in a higher education setting.
Experience working with instructors to produce instructional materials and leverage technology to support teaching and promote learning.
