Job Description
SUMMARY:
The Director of Student Financial Assistance, under general direction, oversees the administration, strong service orientation and operation of Federal, State, and institutional financial assistance programs and scholarships. Ensures that communications with students and parents are transparent and honest, to create both a welcoming, inclusive community and clear understanding of mutual obligations, policies and procedures. Create strategic recommendations for all categories of institutional aid to achieve the university's targeted student body profiles and net tuition revenue goals.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Participates in shaping and implementing the strategic enrollment management plan, including developing services and strategies for recruiting and retaining students. Assists Admissions and/or Enrollment Management and other departments with recruitment activities and special events.
  • Develop and implement a consistent approach to student awards, appeals, interactions and communication that offers exceptional customer service experiences that are both meaningful and educational.
  • Oversees daily operations of Student Financial Assistance and daily management of the Banner financial aid module. Provides leadership and supervision of department staff to ensure adherence to financial aid processes, workload management and service quality by ensuring accurate and timely responses to student/parent inquiries and needs.
  • Interprets, updates and institutes aid policies and procedures to assure that the department complies with federal, state and university regulations; works with fiscal affairs to monitor student compliance and/or institutional reimbursement of aid under Title IV requirements.
  • Oversees the loan, work-study, grant and scholarship application processes
  • Designs and operates financial aid and scholarship outreach programs for students and parents in regional high schools or other venues.
  • Develops new aid sources in working with outside agencies and university community.
  • Serves as advisor to University Financial Aid Appeals Committee which rules on aid appeals by students.
  • Conducts withdrawal counseling to applicants and/or recipients.
  • Oversees the preparation and submission of required reports for Federal, State, institutional, National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and other governing bodies.
  • Develops, justifies, and manages the departmental budgets and other financial aid budgets.
  • Oversees the departmental scholarship program and establishes appropriate policies and procedures for efficient awarding.
  • Communicates with the campus community and external audiences regarding financial aid programs and services. Conducts cross-training for department and University employees as well as external high school counselors on financial aid, scholarships, and student employment programs.
  • Conducts presentations at area high schools, middle schools, elementary schools, and University functions. Counsels parents and students regarding Financial Aid. Conducts entrance and exit counseling to applicants and/or recipients.
  • Estimates long-range needs for financial aid funds and submits applications to Federal, State, and other granting agencies. Develops new aid sources in working with outside agencies and University committees.
  • Serves as liaison between financial aid and other university offices

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience / Knowledge / Skills: Ten years of related experience in financial aid including related supervisory experience. Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications. Knowledge of accounting practices. Knowledge of contemporary financial aid practices and technology. Knowledge of Federal, State, and other applicable statutes and guidelines governing the Financial Aid programs. Excellent customer service, public speaking, and interpersonal (thoughtful and articulate) skills. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Strong planning and organizational skills. Effective leadership, managerial, and supervisory skills.
  • Ability to: Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others. Ability to use technology to automate processes. Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality. Work beyond normal offices hours and/or work on weekends. Ability to travel.
  • Licensing/Professional Certifications: Valid driver's license.
  • Physical Requirements: None
  • Other Requirements: As an advisor to students and/or processor of student athlete information, will be required to receive training in athletic compliance and must follow all NCAA rules.

PREFERRED EDUCATION / SKILLS/ EXPERIENCE:
Master's degree. Prior experience with Direct lending.

Department staff including student workers and graduate assistants
