Job Summary:
The Director of the Academic & Bar Exam Support (ABES) Program oversees and directs this program which serves all School of Law students providing academic tutoring and support, and preparation for taking the California Bar Exam. The Director, in partnership with the Dean and Associate Dean of the School of Law, develops and implements the overall vision and strategy of the ABES Program. The Director manages and oversees the work of an Associate Director, Assistant Professors, Tutors, Graders, and partners with Academic Directors as they handle key day-to-day functions of the ABES Program. The Director is responsible for staying abreast of changes to the California Bar Exam, and related teaching/tutoring techniques to ensure the ABES Program consistently delivers relevant, high-quality support.

Full Job Description:
Job Responsibilities
  • Develops and oversees the overall strategy for the Program including what services, classes, and support to provide year over year to ensure student success
  • Trains and supervises instructors, graders, and tutors with an eye toward accuracy and consistency
  • Oversees Program offering and restructures the Program as necessary for continual improvement
  • Conducts classes, Bar Pass Boot Camps, tutorial sessions, and other teaching sessions as needed, and trains the Associate Director, Assistant Professors, and other team members on conducting these sessions
  • Grades student practice Bar Exams and provides appropriate feedback, and trains other Program support staff on grading and feedback
  • Keeps abreast of any changes and development related to the California Bar Exam and adapts the Program as required to respond to those changes
  • Keeps abreast of developments in academic support techniques, and adapts the Program as required to ensure that students are receiving appropriate, meaningful, and relevant services
  • Oversees the overall Program Budget and works with the Dean to conduct budget strategy, forecasting, and ig picture budget management and resource allocation
  • Collaborates with Academic Directors and faculty to develop curriculum and course offerings strategy
  • Identifies and recruits tutors, graders, and other support staff with the assistance of the Associate Director & Associate Dean
  • Responsible for high-level development of standards and practices for the Program, and partnering with relevant stakeholders in that development and oversees implementation
  • Engages in a strategy of continual improvement to enhance effectiveness, efficiency, and program success

Minimum Requirements
  • JD degree required.
  • Candidate must have successfully passed the California Bar Exam
  • Experience in CA Bar Exam grading
  • Demonstrated experience in CA Bar Exam tutoring
  • Experience in providing academic support in a higher education setting
  • Ability to demonstrate measurable success in improving student performance
  • Ability to track and use student metrics and data to drive decision-making and program improvements
  • Demonstrated leadership ability
  • Excellent computer skills in MS Word and Excel is required
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to manage subordinates and partner with peers and high-level administrators
  • Ability to work with diverse populations
