About the Position:
The College of Natural Science and Mathematics is dedicated to the principle that teaching and research are intricately mixed and undergraduate research is an integral part of education. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our team as a Desert Studies Assistant (Administrative Support Assistant II). The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

CSU Desert Studies Consortium office at CSUF is seeking an assistant that has a broad understanding of desert natural/cultural history to lead various tasks associated with development of outreach activities and public awareness associated with the Desert Studies Program. The successful candidate will also facilitate more effective use of the Desert Studies Center at Zzyzx, CA by visiting educators and researchers. Will assist with coordinating projects such as field research, data collection or outreach functions, and reporting. Must be proficient with social media, web management, data management, Excel, MS Word, and basic outreach methodologies. Other duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications
High School diploma or the equivalent and three years of experience in general office, clerical or secretarial work or the equivalent. General working knowledge of applicable university infrastructure, policies, and procedures. Thorough knowledge of office methods, procedures, practices, and equipment. Thorough knowledge of English grammar, punctuation, and spelling with demonstrated competence in effectively presenting standard information in writing. Ability to learn, interpret independently, apply, and identify deviations from a variety of complex policies and procedures. Ability to apply independent judgment, discretion, and initiative to address problems and develop practical, thorough and, at times, creative solutions. Ability to perform arithmetic functions of a transactional nature, including tracking and comparing data. Ability to work on the front line, with a variety of campus and community individuals requiring active problem solving and effective interpersonal skills. Demonstrated competence in understanding, interpreting, and communicating procedures, policies, information, ideas, and instructions. Basic typing and keyboarding skills.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from an accredited four year college or university in any field related to field sciences (e.g., botany, ecology, environmental geography, geology, archaeology) and at least one year experience in a position that requires independently organizing and implementing outreach activities. Basic understanding of desert natural and cultural history and ability to communicate desert-related scientific information to other parties in written and oral formats.

Willingness to spend occasional weekends at the Zzyzx Desert Studies Center leading student activities under potentially extreme climate conditions (including heat, cold, aridity, rain, sun). Evidence of ability to work independently, and maintain a motivated and enthusiastic attitude.

Special Working Conditions:
Capable of spending 8-hours (with appropriate breaks) conducting outreach activities. Walking up to 2 miles and working in outdoor conditions for extended periods. Able to lift 35 lbs, and carry 20 lbs in a backpack for up to 1/2 mile.

Work at outreach events under cold or hot (30s to low 100s) field conditions, and able to make prudent decisions for worker and participant safety.
