Founded in 1898, Northeastern University is a private research university located in the heart of Boston, Massachusetts. Northeastern is a leader in worldwide experiential learning, urban engagement, and interdisciplinary research that meets global and societal needs. Our broad mix of experience-based education programs - our signature cooperative education program, as well as student research, service learning, and global learning - builds the connections that enable students to transform their lives. Through nearly 150 undergraduate and 200 graduate programs in nine schools and colleges, Northeastern brings over a century of experience and leadership to deliver transformative opportunities for our students and inspire them to delve deeper, sharpen their focus, and pursue greater academic challenges. Our students become engaged citizens of the world, confident and resourceful people who realize that their knowledge and actions can have positive consequences for their own lives and for the lives of others. Northeastern's worldwide network extends to 136 countries and more than 3,000 employers are actively seeking Northeastern students for co-op and full-time positions each year.

As a research university, Northeastern is set apart by our core commitment to integrating research and education to address global and societal needs. Our faculty, graduate students and undergraduate students conduct a wide range of innovative use-inspired research in numerous areas of focus - health, sustainability and security. The University is also home to six national research centers designated by the National Science Foundation, Department of Homeland Security, National Institute of Standards and Technology, National Security Agency and Department of Veterans Affairs.

Northeastern's accelerating momentum can be felt in every corner of our campus, nationally, and around the world. Over the past decade, Northeastern has experienced extraordinary growth in admissions selectivity, research activity, campus life, donor support, and reputation. Today, Northeastern is the largest, most selective private research university in Boston proper, with over 4,200 faculty and staff serving more than 25,000 students from the undergraduate to the master's and doctoral levels. The university operates with a $1.2 billion budget. Unlike many universities, Northeastern has prospered in recent years, enabling investment in new faculty, buildings, and programs. The present economic climate for higher education has provided Northeastern with an opportunity to enhance the quality of its faculty at all ranks. Its research agenda is carefully positioned to areas of special competence and opportunity such as sustainability, health, and security. In addition, the University has implemented a new hybrid budgetary model based on responsibility-based management that will provide its deans with heightened autonomy, financial authority, and decision-making capability.

We continue to meetand exceedthe ambitious goals we have set for our institution. As a result, we are receiving significant external recognition of our success, including an exceptional surge in national rankings. Northeastern is ranked among the top 40 universities in the country by U.S News and World Report. In addition, the Princeton Review has ranked our Career Services in the top 3 in the country among colleges and universities. Reflecting its momentum and the highly in-demand nature of Northeastern's brand of education, in 2017, Northeastern attracted 54,000 undergraduate applications for 2,800 slots in the freshman class - the most applications to any private university in the country.
