Department of English
The Department of English offers a varied and soundly based program that unifies the study of composition, language, and literature. Within the major, students may concentrate their program of study in literature, language, and linguistics, or English education. Linguistics courses at California State University, Dominguez Hills are taught by a dynamic group of faculty members who bring a diverse range of professional interest, strengths, and experiences to the Department of English. The department serves a strongly multicultural and multilingual undergraduate student body, primarily from the Los Angeles metropolitan area. In addition, the English Graduate Program currently includes certificates in Composition and Rhetoric and TESL.

The Position
The California State University, Dominguez Hills Department of English is hiring an Assistant/Advanced Assistant/Associate Professor of English with a specialty in Applied Linguistics. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in both our B.A. program in Language and Linguistics and our M.A. program in Teaching English as a Second Language. She/he will be expected to maintain an active research agenda and serve on department, college, and/or university committees. The normal teaching load if 4-4, with a reduced 3-3 load for the first two years and additional opportunities for reduced teaching load in future years.

Responsibilities
In addition to having a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics or Linguistics, the ideal candidate will offer innovative approaches to teaching language pedagogy ad theory. The candidate will have demonstrated ability to teach second language pedagogy, second language acquisition, and ESL composition. These areas of expertise will enhance the English Department's efforts to improve student success not only within our own majors but within other majors that we support, such as Liberal Studies. Given our multicultural student population, status as a Hispanic-serving institution, and location in the culturally diverse Los Angeles metropolitan area, we are especially interested in candidates whose research emphasizes global or multilingual/translingual perspectives and who can contribute to the programs' growth in these areas. The college and the English department aim to increase diversity and inclusion of the campus community. Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • Applicants must have experience in working with students from diverse age, socioeconomic, cultural, and academic backgrounds.
  • ABD in Applied Linguistics or Linguistics, completed by the time of appointment.
  • A promising research agenda likely to lead to publications in one or more of the following areas: second language pedagogy, second language acquisition, ESL composition, multilingualism, sociolinguistics.

    Preferred /Desired Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Linguistics or Applied Linguistics.
  • Demonstrated record of excellent teaching in areas of academic preparation for a minimum of two years.
  • Professional experience that demonstrates ability to work with and teach non-traditional students.
  • Demonstrated record of administrative service, ideally involving either building partnerships with other academic programs or contributing toward managing a composition program.
  • A demonstrated record of peer-reviewed scholarship and research, along with the ability to teach advanced courses: ESL/EFL reading, World Englishes, literacy studies, discourse analysis, phonology, syntax.

    Employment Requirement - Background Check
    Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
