University of San Francisco

USF Hilltop Campus

Job Title:
Assistant Professor, Tenure-Track, Computer Science

Job Summary:
The Department of Computer Science at the University of San Francisco is accepting applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level starting in August 2022, contingent upon funding approval. We are looking for candidates from all areas of Computer Science or a closely-related field with the ability to teach courses in their area of specialization as well as software development at multiple levels of the curriculum.

The Department of Computer Science is a diverse and growing community with teaching at the undergraduate and master's level as our core mission. We achieve this with small class sizes, project-based learning, and a high degree of student-teacher interaction.

The department is highly collaborative both within and outside the department. Several faculty members are NSF-funded and collaborate with industry in Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area. Computer Science is also listed as one of the strong programs at USF in the 2021 Fiske Guide to Colleges. In addition to undergraduate and Masters programs in CS, the department also supports interdisciplinary programs in Data Science and Engineering. Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) is a core value of the department and of USF; the department has several active initiatives to increase representation among marginalized populations.

USF provides competitive salaries to live in the Bay Area and has excellent support for new faculty such as multiple teaching assistants for your classes, an internal research funding mechanism, and focused writing retreats. USF was listed as a Tier One National University in the 2021 U.S. News & World Report, was ranked 4th in student diversity, and was among best colleges for veterans.

Full Job Description:

Job Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses for our undergraduate and master's program. The standard teaching load for this position at USF is two 4-unit courses per semester with an additional third course every fourth semester (2-2-2-3 over two years). In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active research program that preferably engages students, and perform service duties to the CS department and university.

Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Computer Science or a closely-related field, earned by August 2022. Strong applicants from all CS subdisciplines will be considered. Applicants must demonstrate both exceptional teaching ability, a strong potential for independent and collaborative research, and commitment to work in and promote an inclusive environment. In addition, an understanding of and commitment to support the mission of the University of San Francisco are required. The successful candidate must be able to offer their reflections on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and discuss how they would engage with and enhance departmental and the College's efforts in this area.

Please submit a CV, cover letter, teaching statement, research statement, diversity statement*, and three letters of reference to https://gnosis.usfca.edu/search/jobs to apply.

We encourage applicants to address throughout their application materials how they envision a successful career at USF with respect to their teaching, research, and service. This might include not only a teaching philosophy, but also plans or experience with hands-on teaching, and any experience working with differing communication and learning styles. Specific examples and evidence are encouraged when possible, such as evidence of teaching effectiveness, code repositories, or sample assignments. We encourage a description of your research that describes how you plan to continue that research at an institution that highly values undergraduate research opportunities. *The diversity statement should include your thoughts and/or experiences concerning equitable education for underserved and marginalized communities, your commitment to or experience with broadening participation and accessibility in the field, and/or experience and success in engaging with BIPOC students. Finally, we encourage applicants to address their commitment to or experience with broadening participation in computer science.

To receive full consideration, applications must be complete and submitted by January 3, 2022. Any questions can be sent to cssearch@usfca.edu.
