Position Description
Manages and directs the day to day operations of a research center/institute or medium sized department. Plans, coordinates and supervises the operation and activities of the center/institute/department. Develops and implements policies and procedures, administers the budget, organizes tasks and sets priorities.

Major/Essential Functions
  • Develop and lead a large-scale multidisciplinary center-based team in the area of energy systems.
  • Set the agenda for research and set the vision for the center.
  • Develop a road map and strategic plan for the center.
  • Collaborate internally with colleges, departments, and faculty.
  • Collaborate externally with other universities, national/federal laboratories, and private industry.
  • Develop workshops and invite industry leaders to TTU.
  • Capitalize on funding opportunities through strategic planning and positioning the Institute.
  • Develop and commercialize grid-related technologies and industry-academic collaboration.
  • Market and perform outreach through articles, press releases, and publications to help bring visibility to the TTU grid enterprise.
  • Team, cultivate, write, and submit funding opportunities to increase research expenditures for GLEAMM and University.
  • Rally faculty on campus to involve and educate on-grid and renewable-based collaborative opportunities.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship for GLEAMM.
  • Manage GLEAMM's finances and interact with research support offices on campus.
  • Develop and implement a plan for the financial sustainability for GLEAMM.
  • Work closely with the National Wind Institute (NWI) Director to advance grid, wind, energy, cyber, water (renewables) initiatives for TTU.
  • In addition to the directorship duties, the successful applicant must have a strong, programmatic focus and is expected to attract extramural research funding.


Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree required, master's preferred; Six years progressively responsible management experience. Additional education beyond Bachelor's may substitute for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
A Ph.D. or equivalent in engineering or grid-related degree is critical to strategically plan and operate this dynamic unit. Background in leading an engineering team in the area of energy systems. Journal and conference publications in the areas of micro grids, grid integration or renewable energy systems.

This position requires a technical leader to function in a highly motivated manner while maintaining a technical base to adequately promote GLEAMMs activities. Previous management experience, understanding of microgrid research and education communities, significant leadership and strategic planning ability, knowledge of the strategic plan for University, funding agencies, etc. and its application to GLEAMM, ability to work in highly uncertain and demanding multifaceted environment, ability to rally staff and independently minded faculty for the common good. The ability to lead and set the agenda for research in the area of energy systems.
