Job Summary
The Monitoring the Future (MTF) project is searching for a Research Area Specialist Intermediate. MTF is a large ongoing national study of American youth, and is one of the largest studies within the Survey Research Center at the Institute for Social Research. Supported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and ongoing continuously since 1975, MTF has collected data from well over a million respondents. The data are organized into hundreds of datasets with a variety of complex structures, including both cross-sectional and longitudinal. The products of this study are many: they include annual monographs, scholarly papers, books, presentations, press releases, web-based information, and archived data. Responsibilities*
Contribute to the production of data tables and figures for the project's annual publications and website. Utilize a SAS-driven approach using SAS survey procedures to conduct relevant statistical tests, and ODS and reporting procedures to display results in PDF and HTML format.

Provide quality control assistance to those who manage the project's data files. Collaborate with colleagues to help detect potential issues in these data before they reach the users. Contribute as needed to the production/maintenance/documentation of these files and processes.

Provide data-related support to the authors of the project's various annual publications related to updating the text of these publications. Provide necessary information to facilitate yearly updates, as well as quality control checking to ensure accuracy prior to publication.

Fulfill basic ad hoc data requests for the project's principal investigators and sponsoring agency, such as frequency distributions, confidence limits/standard errors, and basic tests for significance of difference.

Required Qualifications*
Bachelor's degree in social science or other relevant field, along with 3-4 years of experience using SAS for data management and manipulation (or equivalent combination of education and experience). Experience with databases, such as Microsoft Access. Motivated and very attentive to detail. Ability to quickly master new processes, procedures, and computer programs. Ability to work successfully in both a team environment and independently. Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Desired Qualifications*
Advanced experience with SAS, including macro coding, arrays, do-loops, and automated report production. Ability to understand highly complex data and information about the data, including its complex sample design. Basic knowledge of statistics. Good time management skills and ability to work on more than one task at a time.

Underfill Statement
Position may be filled at either the Intermediate or Associate level based upon the overall qualifications of the applicants. For the Associate level, required qualifications are a Bachelor's degree in social science or other relevant field, along with 1-3 years of experience using SAS for data management and manipulation (or equivalent combination of education and experience). Salary range at the Associate Level is $50,000-$60,000 based on qualifications of candidate.
