Note: This is a full-time (40 hours per week), probationary, exempt position
Organizational Description:
The College of Science and Mathematics provides study and training for students in the areas of biology, chemistry, computer science, earth and environmental sciences, mathematics, physics, and psychology. The college's goal is to provide professional training at the undergraduate and graduate levels to serve as a foundation for careers in science or mathematics, to provide pre-professional training in preparation for careers in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine and other professions, and for continued study at the graduate level.
Support courses for non-science majors, including those in agriculture, engineering, and the health professions and courses for general education for all university students are also offered through the college. The College is involved in several CSU initiatives and international partnerships.
Overview:
Under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics or his designee and in consultation with the Dean, Associate Dean, or other appropriate managers of the College of Science and Mathematics, this position is responsible for media relations and the creation and dissemination of communications for the College, its departments and centers, and other College-related entities. This position identifies topics that are of news value and writes related stories and press releases, in close consultation with University Communications, creates, manages, and implements media updates, working closely with University Communications, and maintains strong relations with department chairs, center directors, and the development director in promoting the College's activities and accomplishments to its students, faculty, the University community, the San Joaquin Valley and CSM alumni.
Responsibilities include writing compelling stories and the creation and dissemination of communications on behalf of the College while assisting College departments and programs with messaging in their specific units. This position researches, creates, manages, and implements media updates, manages digital signage, promotes the College through social media, and maintains strong relationships with the University and community. Along with University Communications, the incumbent is expected to work closely with other academic communication specialists to ensure that proper branding is followed and a consistent campus strategy is developed and executed to advance the academic mission of the College and the University. Work is performed autonomously under general supervision and requires regular exercising of judgment and discretion to interpret policies, procedures, and objectives. Work is reviewed against overall goals and objectives, with full accountability for results, and soundness of judgement.
Position Summary:
After consultation with the Dean or his designees, independently perform specialized or varied communications assignments related to College public affairs, media relations, publications development, and marketing and research
Act as spokesperson when requested by the Dean or Associate Dean
Collaborate with departments, center directors and staff on all print materials, electronic communications and web-based publications
Manage the College's social media accounts: post new and compelling content frequently and facilitate engagement with constituents via social media outlets
Assist in public relations and outreach for College events, program, symposiums and conferences
Collaborate with designers, photographers, faculty, and others on theme, design, and content of print and electronic publications to maximize impact
Edit, proofread, and revise communications as well as other materials assigned by the Dean or Associate Dean or his designees
Conduct research for stories by interviewing chairs, faculty, staff, students, alumni and volunteers.
Research and write compelling articles for print and digital media
Write press releases and identify new story ideas regarding the College and its faculty and students
Help the College's departments with managing with websites and updating data on a regular basis
Assist in writing and editing the College's Elements Magazine
Utilize photography and video filming and editing skills as needed to enhance social media initiatives
Take initiative and independently plan, organize, coordinate, and perform work where numerous and diverse demands are involved
Assist in PR and outreach for College's events, program, conferences and activities
Assist College Development Office on donor/community outreach events
Assist with the planning, coordinating and promoting of College events and programs independently and as needed in collaboration with other College units
In consultation with the Dean, development and implementation of the College's communication systems
Perform other duties and/or tasks that may be assigned
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Working knowledge of and ability to apply standard theories, practices, principles and techniques related to communications in the public affairs, media, marketing information areas
Working knowledge of copyright and other applicable laws pertaining to publications and the media
Working knowledge of marketing and research techniques and methods
Thorough knowledge of and ability to use effectively media outlets including planning media coverage and media publicity campaigns for the university and events
Thorough knowledge of web communication techniques, vehicles and formats
Knowledge of interview techniques and the ability to define and deliver media messages
Strong story development and journalistic writing skills, as well as advanced editorial skills
Exceptional interpersonal skills, including strong public speaking, listening and interpretive skills
Ability to:
Build and manage more sophisticated media contacts
Effectively use web technology to achieve communication goals
Analyze and select pertinent facts and integrate them into communication vehicles
Apply market research to identify communication needs and target audiences
Provide lead work direction
Demonstrated ability to keep abreast of campus events and subject matter expertise in relation to current events to identify and capitalize on media opportunities that will promote the university and increase positive media coverage
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's Degree from a four-year regionally accredited institution or comparable experience in the field of media relations or communications
Two years minimum of proven experience in the field of social media, media relations, website design and management, publications development or marketing and research
Preferred Skills:
Experience with graphic design
Experience with video editing
Thorough knowledge of and ability to write compelling press releases and news stories to garner media coverage of programs, news and events in the College
Knowledge of university communication objectives and ability to translate them into effective communication and media campaigns
Exceptional networking and interpersonal skills, including strong public speaking, listening and interpretive skills
Working knowledge of protocols and etiquette related to public relations and media relations
Ability to:
Establish and maintain effective working relationships within and outside the work group and serve as a liaison for the college
Identify and pitch story ideas to university officials, University Communications, and media outlets
Research and repurpose various content for social media posting
Manage multiple, concurrent research and writing assignments, working successfully under deadline
Work independently and take initiative to develop projects, find resources, solve problems, and obtain information
Appropriately handle sensitive and confidential information
