Northeastern University

Lecturer, Assistant, or Associate Teaching Professor of Choral Arts

Requisition Number: FTFR001015

Division/College: College of Arts, Media and Design

Location: Boston Main Campus

Full-time/Part-time: Full Time

Responsibilities:

NORTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY announces a search for lecturer or assistant/associate teaching professor, non-tenure-track, full-time, who will serve as Director of Choral Activities. The successful candidate will manage a choral ensemble of about one hundred singers, with a more select ensemble incorporated for certain literature. Because a chamber orchestra is sometimes involved in concert performances, skill in leading an instrumental ensemble is essential as well. Also important is the ability to maintain a robust relationship with the Boston community and with chorus alumni, both of which are sources of supplementary funding for the Choral Society. Additionally, the ideal candidate will be an innovative and engaging classroom teacher, with the ability to generate new course content that encompasses experientially driven classroom experiences; possible areas of focus may include conducting, choral arranging, a cappella singing, integrated performance and analysis, and/or topics that integrate choral performance with music technology or music industry. The assignment of additional, introductory-level courses currently in the catalog (e.g., Introduction to Art, Drama and Music) may also be expected. Candidates should be committed to fostering diverse and inclusive environments as well as to promoting experiential learning, which are central to a Northeastern University education. The position has an anticipated start date of fall semester 2018.

Qualifications:

A masters degree is required; a doctorate is preferred, along with at least five years of conducting college or adult choruses with demonstrated success. The successful candidate will possess a dynamic personality and exceptional interpersonal skills, and will be an inspirational presence in the classroom. She/he/they will exhibit a broad knowledge of traditional, contemporary and cross-ethnic choral repertoire, along with the ability to teach a variety of related topics, which may include choral conducting; choral literature and performance practice; broader topics in music history and/or ethnomusicology; or related topics that connect to music industry or music technology. A deep knowledge of healthy vocal production for young and developing voices is essential.

Additional Information:
The music departments degree offerings include the B.A. in Music, a B.S. in Music Technology, a B.S. in Music Industry, a variety of combined majors in music and other disciplines (including computer science, physics and engineering), a Masters in Music Industry Leadership, a graduate certificate in Arts Administration (in collaboration with other disciplines) and a Performance Certificate in partnership with the New England Conservatory of Music.

The College of Arts, Media and Design has a unique combination of disciplines, including Architecture, Art+Design, Communication Studies, Journalism, Media and Screen Studies, Music, and Theatre.
