ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:
Student Housing & Residential Life (SH&R) provides an environment that supports and empowers students to learn and grow in their residential communities and beyond. CSUMB's residential communities are capable of housing more than 50% of the student body, with a capacity of more than 2500 bed spaces on Main Campus in residence halls, suites and apartments, and 1350 bed spaces on East Campus in apartments. On-campus housing for individual students in Main Campus and East Campus, and on East Campus for students with families is a significant recruitment and retention tool for the University.

POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the general direction of the Associate Director of Residential Education, the Assistant Director of Residential Life for Main Campus & North Quad is responsible as well as implementation of the educational and operational facets of two specific residential areas, encompassing eight traditional residence halls and North Quad. This position is responsible for providing administrative and management support to the Associate Director in support of the mission of the Office of Student Housing & Residential Life, and serves as a member of the extended Leadership team for the Department. The primary areas of responsibility are staff supervision, collaboration with campus partners, care and safety initiatives, staff training, administration, programs and events, operations, facility management, and customer service.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
Supervision/Oversight/Leadership:

  1. Directly supervise and evaluate Community Directors, which encompass oversight in the Main Campus and North Quad areas. Indirect oversight of Resident Advisors (RAs).
  2. Serve as a member of the leadership team for the department and assist in critical decisions that impact residential students
  3. Partner with department's staff related to residential academic initiatives, to promote, and enhance the Living Learning Programs.
  4. Act as an additional point of contact for any other campus partner, when working through resident issues for traditional Residence Halls and Suites areas.
  5. Serve in the Administrator On-Call emergency response rotation for Student Housing & Residential Life.

Risk Management, Safety, and Care:

  1. Represent department as an active member of the Care Team for the Division of Student Life.
  2. Responsible for the oversight and management of documented student concerns, including, but not limited to: mental health, physical wellness, and behavioral concerns.
  3. Lead all efforts and committees in residential life regarding Exceptions to Policy, Emergency preparedness, and safety processes.
  4. Create and implement on-going safety training for both professional and student staff.
  5. Assist in completing reports of Clery numbers to Clery Compliance Officer..
  6. Serve as department liaison, when appropriate in day-to-day operations to University Offices including, but not limited to; University Police, Title IX, Clery Director, Student Disability Resource Center, and the Dean's Office.

Campus Partnerships:

  1. Serve as additional liaison for students and identified SH&RL campus partnership populations, including, but not limited to: International students, student athletes, students with disabilities, at-risk students, former foster youth and other identified populations.
  2. Act as an additional contact for campus partner populations when requesting information.
  3. Serve as a resource for SH&RL around specific needs and issues for campus partner populations.
  4. Work in partnership with Assignments Coordinator, and Associate Director for Operations & Finance regarding the assignments and early arrival support for campus partner populations.

Other Functions:

  1. Serves as the primary point of contact and chair of various department committees, as assigned.
  2. Participate in weekly building walk-throughs with the Senior Facilities Coordinator and hall/area staff.
  3. Serve as a liaison to other campus partners that work closely with Student Housing and Residential Life.
  4. Identify issues in area or departmental concern and take initiative to resolve or report them and assist in the identification of potential solutions.
  5. Keep a strategic focus on partnership building across campus as the department and university grow.
  6. Promote and maintain an atmosphere of excellent internal and external customer service within the Student Housing & Residential Life program.
  7. Promote and encourage department efforts toward participating in campus wide Basic Needs Initiatives.
  8. Perform other duties as assigned.

Successful candidates will possess: a working knowledge of practice, procedure, management, and activities of Student Housing and Residential Life Program. This candidate will have substantial understanding of student development theory, group dynamics, and current issues and trends in higher education; an understanding of student development, staff development, leadership development, multicultural issues. This candidate must have the ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; ability to initiate and use resourcefulness in planning work assignments; ability to advise students individually and in groups on routine matters and complex matters; ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty CSU administrators, student organizations, and others in committee work. Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills.

Must have the ability to sensibly manage emergencies and respond diplomatically and effectively to complaints. Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action; ability to determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature; ability to interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or students organizations; analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action. Ability and skill to supervise the work of multiple direct reports and effectively recommend personnel actions; strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills; train and evaluate the productivity and performance of employees; and analyze situations and take corrective action. Ability to carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
Bachelors Degree from an accredited college/university in a College Student Services Administration or a closely related field AND at least two years of experience managing and coordinating residential programs. Working knowledge of the practice, procedures, management and activities of a Housing & Residential Life program. Advanced Degree, may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Specialized Skills:
Must be available to work evening and weekends when necessary. Advanced fluency in using various standard office software packages such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Demonstrated technical literacy with electronic mail, mail merges, data entry, electronic scheduling, and internet communication software. Ability to work in an occasional high-pressured environment. Ability to operate a wide variety of office equipment and independently troubleshoot problems. Demonstrated experience that clearly provides evidence of the knowledge and skills required to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements identified above are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required. Ability to complete web-based training in Defensive Driving and continue to meet the established driving standards as a condition of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:
Additional experience as live-in staff and Masters Degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, Counseling, Sociology, or related field highly desirable; demonstrated supervisory and leadership experience; experience advising student groups; demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the CSUMB Vision Statement and the core values of mutual respect, collaboration and service orientation, multiculturalism and diversity, community service and institutional excellence; experience working with a multicultural population; familiarity performing community service learning.

Compensation and Benefits:
The University Corporation is committed to providing our employees with a comprehensive program that rewards efforts that are appreciated by your colleagues, students, and the customers we serve. The salary range for this position is $5,417 per month. This is an exempt position and as such is not eligible for the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Benefits include medical, dental, vision and life insurance benefits, contributory retirement plan, TSA (403b), 13 paid holidays per year and other benefits. University Corporation of Monterey Bay positions are "at-will" employment.
