Responsibilities:

Northeastern University announces a search for an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) of Ethnomusicology, with a background and research interest in music of the African diaspora, Jazz, Improvisation (across genres, cultures and media), and musical traditions around the globe, engaged from a broadly ethnographic and cross-disciplinary perspective.

The new faculty member will be asked to provide innovation and leadership in adding new course material to our curriculum, and to teach topics that may include (but are not limited to) the history and practice of jazz, jazz improvisation, improvisation across the arts, black popular music (including Hip Hop), global pop music, the urban musical communities (with a focus on Boston), and other courses that integrate ethnographic scholarship and experiential learning in a musical context. Candidates should be committed to fostering diverse and inclusive environments as well as to promoting experiential learning, which are central to a Northeastern University education. The position has an anticipated start date of Fall 2018.

Qualifications:

For this appointment, the Department of Music in the College of Arts, Media and Design at Northeastern University seeks an inspirational colleague with a doctorate in a music discipline related to the above-mentioned fields of inquiry. The ideal applicant will have the ability to integrate critical inquiry and creative practice across an array of disciplines and cultures within and beyond the arts. We seek someone who will make important contributions to a department that offers a widely encompassing and flexible series of paths to majoring in music, in keeping with a larger view of creativity as inherently collaborative and central to all areas of study. The candidate we seek will possess a promising record of, or substantial progress toward, significant recognition and achievement in musical scholarship and performance practice.

The music departments degree offerings include the B.A. in Music, a B.S. in Music Technology, a B.S. in Music Industry, a variety of combined majors in music and other disciplines (including computer science, physics and engineering), a Masters in Music Industry Leadership, a graduate certificate in Arts Administration (in collaboration with other disciplines) and a Performance Certificate in partnership with the New England Conservatory of Music.

The College of Arts, Media and Design has a unique combination of disciplines, including Architecture, Art+Design, Communication Studies, Journalism, Media and Screen Studies, Music, and Theatre.
