The Assistant Director of Residential Life is a live-in position that focuses on fostering community and opportunities for student growth and development for upper division residential students. The Assistant Director selects, trains, and supervises the three Community Directors, two Assistant Community Directors, Resident Assistants, and Graduate Assistant in the upper division residential areas. The Assistant Director applies student development theory and practice to inform and guide staff in the development of comprehensive programming appropriate for upper division residential students. The Assistant Director shares in the responsibility of serving as a first responder to the professional staff during crisis and emergency response within the residence halls. The Assistant Director works in collaboration with other departments across campus to further develop and implement the Second-Year Torero Experience program (STEP). The Assistant Director works collaboratively with University Ministry staff to support the Resident Ministry program.
This position receives general supervision from the Director of Residential Education. The Assistant Director directly supervises the three Community Directors responsible for upper division students and one Graduate Assistant for the STEP. Indirectly supervises two Assistant Community Director Graduate Assistants.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Staff Selection, Supervision, and Professional Development
a. Train, develop, and supervise the three professional live-in staff in all areas of responsibility – Community Development, Community Standards, and Housing Operations, within the upper division residential areas. Meet with Community Director staff one-on-one on a weekly basis to provide guidance, direction, and support in carrying out responsibilities. Provide regular feedback to Community Director staff regarding areas of strength and growth. Identify areas for additional training and development.
b. Under the direction of the Director of Residential Education, support the recruitment, hiring, and onboarding of Community Director and paraprofessional staff. Professional staff – participate in recruitment and hiring processes at conferences and other means, participate in the interview process, provide input in decision-making, co-design and implement annual and ongoing training. Paraprofessional staff – oversee the reappointment, recruitment, and selection process of staff, co-design and implement annual and ongoing trainings.
2. Program Development
a. Conduct assessment and evaluation of staff training and selection processes, residential education program (ACUHO-I, RA Evaluation), and STEP program. Utilize data to inform changes to processes and programs.
b. Work collaboratively with key university partners such as the Career Development Center, Wellness, International Center and others to ensure a vibrant and engaging STEP program.
3. On-call, Wellness, and Safety
a. Serve in the on-call rotation which includes emergency response, referral to campus resources, and crisis intervention. Must be available via phone on a 24-hour a day basis for the professional residence life staff.
b. Work closely with the Department of Public Safety on all proactive safety campaigns and be responsive to safety concerns.
c. Work closely with the Wellness division to administer proactive wellness campaigns and be responsive to wellness trends.
4. Residential Life Administration
a. Assist with evaluation and assessment of department's programs, services, policies and procedures. Serve on committees as assigned by the Director of Residential Education.
Master's degree required; Master's degree in student development, counseling or related area strongly preferred, AND
Three-five years' experience in Residence Life required.
Supervision of graduate and professional staff experience strongly preferred.
Demonstrated familiarity with Catholic higher education and commitment to promoting the Catholic mission and vision of the University strongly preferred.
Performance Expectations: Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Know and direct compliance with all USD Residence Life and University policies and procedures.
Be able to advise students as necessary and refer them to the University counseling center as appropriate.
Be able to maintain confidentiality and comply with FERPA standards; refrain from, and discourage the discussion of confidential information.
Work collaboratively with a variety of constituencies from diverse backgrounds.
Possess strong writing ability and organizational skills.
Ability to appraise the quality/condition of residence life.
Attend and participate on assigned University committees.
Maintain a positive, effective, and mutually supportive working relationship with all University departments.
Ability and interest in collaborating with Resident Ministers to support the holistic development of students.
Work effectively with off-campus city and law enforcement officials and USD Department of Public Safety.
Attend workshops as appropriate to remain up-to-date on current university academic advising policies and procedures.
Demonstrated ability to develop and assess learning outcomes.

This is a live-on position with on-call responsibilities
