Position Summary

Big Bend Community College (BBCC) is seeking qualified faculty for a full-time, tenure-track position in Biology. The Biological Sciences Department has three (3) full-time instructors within the larger Math/Science Division. We are looking for a person prepared and interested in teaching biological science courses for allied health students.

BBCC is a small rural community college located in the sunny, central part of Washington State, and is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. Big Bend Community College serves approximately 4,000 students, with an annualized FTE of approximately 2,000, in a 4,600-square-mile service district including 15 communities in Grant and Adams counties and the Odessa School District in Lincoln County with on-site, online instruction, and interactive classrooms.

Essential Job Duties

Responsibilities will include but not be limited to the following:



  • Prepare and teach biology classes developed for students pursuing allied health careers, particularly human anatomy and physiology and microbiology. Other classes might include survey of biology, human biology, general biology for allied health, or nutrition. This may include day, evening, hybrid and online classes.

  • Provide access for students through posted office hours, electronic communication, and other appropriate methods.

  • Instruct, assist, and motivate students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies as well as regular and substantive feedback on assignments and discussions.

  • Advise students; assist students in planning an educational program and in selecting courses, and when necessary refer students to appropriate student services for assistance.

  • Participate as an active member of working committees dealing with instruction, college-wide and department assessment, student matters and/or college related concerns.

  • Work effectively with colleagues and students of various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds and be a positive contributing member of the campus community.

  • Provide advice and support for biology adjunct faculty in conjunction with the department.

  • Maintain positive and effective communications with students, faculty, administration and staff.

  • Foster a flexible, healthy learning environment with respect for student diversity.

  • Demonstrate a commitment to professional growth, development, and conduct.

  • Other duties as agreed to with division chair or administrator.




Minimum & Desirable Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Master's degree in biology or in a related biological science with substantial coursework in graduate-level biology from a regionally accredited institution.

  • Teaching experience at the post-secondary level (community college or university).

  • Experience working with students from diverse academic, age, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.



DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Teaching experience at the community college level, including creating and teaching laboratory exercises.

  • Experience teaching biology courses designed for students pursuing allied health careers, specifically human anatomy and physiology and microbiology.

  • Experience with media preparation for microbial culture.

  • Experience implementing innovative teaching methods such as flipped instruction, coordinated studies, team teaching, active learning, or computer-aided instruction.

  • Experience implementing strategies to improve student success and retention.

  • Experience with online learning, hybrid courses, and learning management systems (Canvas, etc.)

  • Demonstrated multicultural experience (fluency in other languages, work experience, or literary/cultural/travel experience) which add breadth and depth to teaching.

TEACHING DEMONSTRATION:
Applicants selected for an interview will be required to give a short (approximately 10-15 minute) teaching demonstration on a topic to be determined prior to the interview. If possible, the teaching demonstration will be held in a classroom. The demonstration will be held prior to the start of the formal interview.
